It's viewed as a black hole right now, is it as bad as we fear? Is it a hopeless situation?
I know when I see Victor Davis out there in the spring, and then we move a 5th, or is it 6th, year guy in Brandon Williams to CB - it seems like this is a disaster in the making. But let's put on some maroon glasses and convince ourselves otherwise, and back slap a bit, and drink, and pretend it's all good.
Harris has been a frustrating player, but I don't feel he is a bad player. When you make a mistake at CB it's very visible - he's had those plays, too many PI's but he doesn't usually get burned like Davis in that he's not around the ball. Sure, he got trucked - but in that matchup, it's expected if you don't form tackle. He didn't, went high, and got embarrassed. Anyway, we've seen some frustrating DB's become very serviceable in their senior years - I hope that is the case with Harris, he can stick with WR's and be a pest and serviceable.
What can Noel Ellis bring us? We had some decent expectations for him and then he missed all of next year. Is he recovered, and 100% back to pre-health issue physically? Can he help us at CB and not just be a situational nickel?
What does Nick Harvey bring? COnsensus seems to be he is borderline bust for a 4 star, do we not feel he can step up?
Alex Sezer impressed us a bit, considering he was a throwaway 2 star, in a couple situation. He's now a Junior - can he competently execute Chavis's schemes? Just doesn't have the speed or size?
Victor Davis looked lost last year - it was unbelievable how many times he got burned by 20 yards despite not being on the field that much. Is there any hope here? Was it more of a mental thing with the previous scheme, and perhaps he will fit the Chavis approach better?
What about Brandon Williams? The fish?
Our DL looks very strong. LB's, if they stay healthy, have some good bodies and at least a two deep that isn't embarrassing like in recent years. Safety looks solid. Maybe because most parts look OK it has tainted our CB view to the point we are talking like there won't be anybody even out at that position. I think we have bodies to try, and I have a bit more hope for Harris than most. ......but then I remember the Brandon Williams move and I break out in a sweat.
