Seems you might go a little easier on a kid the first few days out of hs and in a new state. From Mod on OB:
Some housecleaning on Cecil Cherry before I start on practice observations ...
Cherry was telling people inside the program just the other day how awesome it is at Texas and how good of a time he's having. Then practice started ...
The harsh truth is that Cherry was struggling already. I mean really struggling. At Sunday's open practice, I must've heard his name called 100 times by the UT coaches, and I don't mean in a good way. Pre-snap mix-ups, going the wrong way once the ball was snapped, not going hard in drills, not being physical enough ... you name it, he was getting his ass chewed for it.
Cherry was the recipient of some of Brian Jean-Mary and Vance Bedford's harsh words that I put in my notes on Sunday (pay special attentions to Nos. 2 and 11).
Cherry can say it wasn't about depth charts and he doesn't care about the competition, but bottom line is that he was really struggling, he was way behind, and he knew it. Now he's on his way out after only four practices, and I think it has very little to do with being homesick or not getting the number he wanted.
