At this point, I think we will. It just may look a bit different. Personnel-wise, a typical 4 man front requires a nose tackle, an under tackle (or 3 tech) and weakside (non TE side)/ strongside (over TE) defensive ends. Generally, the NT and the SDE are bigger, bulkier guys who's first job is stopping the run on the way to the backfield. The 3 tech and WDEs are usually more disruptors or pass rushers, though playing the run is still primary of any position on the line. Still, it has been a while since where we appear to be a little less stout at some positions, especially at SDE. Does that mean an overhaul of our base defense? No, the roles will still be there, but there may have to be some philosophy changes as to how the responsibilities are carried out. Having a bigger but still athletic 4 man front allows a coach to make a lot of "rack & stack" calls, just knowing his team can hold up hat-to-hat. We still retain a lot of our size, speed and quickness. We may have to just run more slants, stunts and other "games" on the line in order to protect against wearing down. The upside of running more actions on the line is it will take more advantage of what some of our kids do really well...like rush the passer e.g., Howell. The downside is that we must be extremely disciplined in staying with assignments, not over pursuing or losing contain. We had enough of those problems this year, even with all-conference guys. For the line, and the defense overall, I can state one thing with absolute certainty. Coach Elko watched it this year and he ain't having it again!
