The purposes of our forces in Afghanistan was, is and should continue to be PREVENTION OF ANOTHER 09/11 FROM BEING PLANNED AND EXECUTED from AFGHANISTAN. That mission should be continued to be conducted by our SOF - Green Berets augmented by RANGERS, DELTA, 160th SOAR, SEALS, & CIA in-country, & USAF bomber crews stationed abroad.
THAT MISSION HAS HAD 20 YEARS OF UNMATCHED SUCCESS. No 09/11 attacks since we invaded. Our SOF are designed to take on confrontations of undetermined duration because like the Cold War, those are threats Great Powers usually face in their existence as responsible leaders of nations on this planet. In this case our SOF have prevented another 09/11 against our Homeland for two decades, and can continue to do so.
PROTRACTED CONFLICT IS WHAT SOF DOES.
Our SOF are much like Roman legions who protected the Empire's borders and foreign interests, or France's Foreign Legion, or Spain's Foreign Legion or the British- commanded Indian Army. All these guarded their home countries with low visibility, sometimes Black operations, often in conflict that was well short of full blown warfare.
AND WHAT HAS BEEN THE COST IN BLOOD FOR TO SUSTAIN THIS PROTECTION AGAINST RADICAL ISLAMIC STRATEGIC STRIKE AGAINST OUR HOMELAND? No fatal casualties in the last 18 months.

SO WHO IS "WINNING"?
In point of fact there are no wins or losses in this genre of conflict, only shifting levels of success for the bold and insightful, or devastating loss for those who lack insight and/or national will.
SO WHAT ABOUT THE STUPID "DEMOCROTIZATION" PROCESS? - Silly, pointless US propaganda.
The making of Afghans into permanent, self sustaining allies is as impossible today as making favorable political changes there were in the 2,500 year past for the Greeks under Alexander the Great, or the British in the 1840s, or the Soviets in the 1980s. The Afghans are forever divided tribally, and lack the knowledge, culture and will to accept any kind of a nation - building effort. The best we can hope for are pro western elements' temporary assistance to subdue the Taliban. Transition to democracy was a naive and impossible vision to begin with, and has nothing to do with American vital interest there. We are there to kill enemies who aim to kill us, and neuter any attempts to attack our Homeland.

Now, thanks to inanity and naivete in both American political parties about the nature of the indefinite mission in Afghanistan, we will have to start all over again, or as we are wont to do, do nothing and stupidly take yet another 09/11 hit from uninterrupted militant planning and direction from bases in Afghanistan - this time, possibly nuclear.
