LAS VEGAS -- Four-star quarterback Tate Martell took the field for the first time as a Texas A&M commit Saturday night as Bishop Gorman edged visiting Chandler of Arizona, 35-14.
Martell certainly had his moments. He did well to feel pressure in the pocket and, as we've seen him do many times, he rolled out and kept his eyes down field to seek targets. When there was nothing there, he wasn't afraid to tuck the ball and run if he had to. Martell has a great feel for the zone read and that's a major asset in the Gorman offense, which he believes will help him tremendously when he steps on campus in College Station.
He made a few throws that were just outstanding. He uses his lower body well to build momentum toward his target and would have probably had better numbers on the night if some of those throws hadn't been dropped by receivers.
Martell told me he can't wait until teammate Tyjon Lindsey, the No. 20 overall prospect in the 2017 class, visits Texas A&M so he can see and feel what he did.
Lindsey flashed in his own right. He had a 30-yard TD reception after sneaking past the safety. He also opened the game with a long catch and run, and took an end-around for a long gain right after that. He sealed the victory with an interception deep in Gorman territory, but he says he's looking at being an offensive player only at the next level.
Defensive tackle Haskell Garrett, a Rivals100 prospect in the 2017 class, also told me Martell hasn't stopped recruiting him to Texas A&M in recent weeks.
