Stat sheet would indicate we ran the ball well last night, but on several plays, where we absolutely need to get 1- 3 yards, we couldn't do it. 3rd and 1, 4th and 1, 3rd and goals, 3rd and 3, etc., etc… Tra Carson is a great Aggie - runs hard and plays with all heart. What he's typically not going to do is pop one outside. And so in those critical running plays, where the defense is pretty much keyed up to stop the run, they can bet the farm that we'll run between the tackles. Chances of Tra taking outside are pretty slim.
People have been begging Spav to stick with the run, and several times he did last night to no success. Defenses don't have to respect the perimeter with us in short-yardage situations. There were several plays last night where Allen could have pulled it back in and taken it outside - but he's just learning the read option…..and yet he he's still our best perimeter run option. Which is saying something. Kid's a natural born pocket passer and yet we need to him to run the ball.
Carson offers a lot, but in this offense, we're going to be limited if he's getting all the carries. Put in a jumbo package or go under center, and you might as well send the playcall over to the defense. It's not what we do. What I'd like to see is try Kyler in some of those short yardage run situations. That at least makes the defense respect the perimeter. If defense sells out to stop the middle, Kyler easily gets outside. Defense stays home, then Tra has the match-ups inside that favor him.
Doesn't matter if the defense knows we're going to run if Kyler comes in - he's proficient at the read option and we can go up the middle with Tra or outside with Kyler. But we have to establish some sort of perimeter threat with the run, and for all Tra is, he can't do that. And without that, we'll continue to be limited in short yardage situations.
