Playing particularly close attention to Reed. I focused mostly on passing plays, trying to figure out if Reed is progressing as a passing QB.
Reed was 20/31 on the night with 268 passing yards and 41 yards rushing with 1 TD. He left after the first drive of the 3rd quarter with about 20 + minutes of football left in the game. We were up 31-0 at the time,
Reed obviously had 11 incompletions….. 12, if you count one that was a penalty on NMSU, but let’s just focus on the 11 that counted.
I rewatched every single missed pass, and 6 of his 11 misses hit the receivers in the hands. As in, the football literally touched hand or fingertips on over half of his misses. Of the remaining 5 misses, one was an inconsequential INT at the end of the first half (it mattered because we missed points, but it was essentially a punt that left NMSU with no time to score or respond). 2 of the remaining 4 were not even close, and the final two were close, including the one hopper to Noah Thomas on his final drive of the night. There are 2 remaining incomplete passes, and one of them was a spike to stop the clock, and the other was a ball floated out of the back of the end zone. He may have been throwing the ball away, but there was a receiver in the vicinity, so I don’t know.
To be fair, not all of the 6 incompletions that hit their hands were very catchable…. But he wasn’t far off. To Mark’s point, just a smidge more touch on those short incompletions, and Reed is sitting nearly 80% completion.
In summary, my opinion is that Reed is improving as a passer, and he is not as far away as some of you think.
