I understand firing Jimbo and the timing of it, especially if they thought they had their guy. I understand the self imposed timeline for a new hire, holding the class together and avoiding transfers with a quality/splash hire.
What I can’t wrap my head around:
1. We had some of the top coaches in the country circled as targets just a few days ago, including Lanning, Day, DeBoer, Fisch and others. Suddenly, because a rumor surfaced that we hired Stoops, we are now going to have to settle for Elko, E-Rob, or possibly Fisch. Why?
Release a statement explaining the false rumors, and get on with the process. If you can’t get your guy by the self-imposed deadline, extend it. You don’t hire a less than excellent coach to hold on to players, it makes no sense. If it’s the wrong hire, you lose them to the portal eventually.
Something isn’t adding up, and all we can really rely on is what Bjork said about aTm’s goals/criteria and timeline, which means the Stoops deal makes zero sense and could very easily be walked back.
