Anonymous Ex-SEC Coach Has Telling Admission On Best Jobs

USC’s decision to fire Clay Helton has sparked an interesting debate this week about the best jobs in college football. Earlier this week, a former SEC assistant shared his thoughts on this subject.

During a discussion with Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, this anonymous assistant coach didn’t rank any SEC jobs among his top five jobs nationally. He believes that’s due to the politics and meddling that takes place within the conference.

“Alabama won’t be the best after Nick,” the ex-SEC assistant coach said. “All of these [top jobs] have a combination of commitment to a player development, facilities, minimal meddling on day-to-day and commitment to hiring and retaining excellent people that surround the program – without the politics and unrealistic expectations that some SEC schools have when it comes to keeping up with Bama, A&M, etc.”

Even though this anonymous ex-SEC coach admit that Alabama is the best job right now, he believes the program will revert to its old ways once Nick Saban is gone.
“I feel like Alabama is the best job, but once Nick leaves they will go back to the same meddling, political stuff that they dealt with prior to him getting there. I think for a head coach, you have to factor in your ability to freely do what you think is best, and I don’t see that at the SEC schools except Bama and A&M with Jimbo. Without Jimbo, same A&M.”

There aren’t too many fans out there agreeing with this take. They believe SEC programs, like Alabama and Texas A&M, will always be viewed as dream destinations for college football coaches.
