If you’re Durkin last year and you know the offense is going to struggle to score mid 20’s, what do you do? I think he went with the bend but don’t break philosophy. You never give up the big play, you try to hold you opponents to FGs, you hope they make mistakes, and you never leave your young’uns on an island. This would explain some of the three man fronts and the good pass D. If you look at the run stats, a bunch of yards came on QB scrambles. We never spied the QB as that gives up a pass defender. We would drop off and that would open up scramble lanes. Add in the injuries and the youth on the DL, and he may have felt like he had no choice.
Fast forward 9 months and what’s he thinking now? He knows Petrino is good for 35+. He knows he has stupid depth/talent on the DL. He knows Chapel is a lock down corner and he has at least 3 good options for the other side. The safeties are talented and have good experience. It’s time for the “go for the kill” philosophy. We can recover from a big play here and there. We can also cause a ton of problems for opposing offenses because we can take more chances. We can blitz, we can mix coverages, and we can stunt. The talent is there.
He will be known as “Dial it up Durkin” by the time we roll into Baton Rouge!
