Has this been discussed "Austin Related"

And here I thought it was bad in the late 1980's when you had to get the Austin City Council approval to remove an 8" caliper tree. We were building part of Great Hills Baptist Church at the time.

I distinctly remember all the stories about how the Austin City Council tried to stop the building of SWPKY. All them good for nothin' Lakeway/Bee Caves suns a beetches

If you haven’t been paying attention it’s been coming. It’s interesting how these cities like SF, Seattle, Portland, NY, Austin and countless other’s have turned into chaos that are now defunding the police department’s. The city councils are systematically following the same actions in every city and having the same outcomes. Homeless people everywhere, less cops and more crime. It’s terrible. You can’t ignore it

I thought I remembered seeing somewhere that Austin, Texas was one of the highest concentrations of Texas A&M University graduates.
Who in the **** that graduated from Texas A&M would move to Austin Texas or anywhere around the goddamn place?

Dried Up Rocky Ass Shithole Place that it is?

I could be wrong, but if I own a company in one of these defunding cities, I would consider moving to a safer place. I know for my family, safety comes first.

Apparently, you can if you're running one of these cities.

Those seeking employment. My son just started working in the State Land Office. Not much option on office locations.

They’re doing it on purpose. It’s a movement that I can’t understand other than they hate this place and are creating anarchy to overthrow what we’ve got going now

I’d Rather Rob Christians Leaving Church Than Move Inside Austin City Limits.

I believe AOC is trying to achieve a suburban feel to the downtown regions of large cities. The suburbs spend their money on nice extras and less on police. She wants to achieve that same model for the inner cities.

They don't deserve their namesake. And they don't deserve to be the capitol of this republic that was paid for with the blood of our patriots. Guadalupe St. hasn't changed much since the '60s.They're still worthless hippies. Thank God for Greg Abbot et al. Our last line of defense.

That’s not much of a line of defense.
Dude isn’t near what he portray’s himself to be. He’ll cater to those types, too.

I live on the outskirts I guess in Lago Vista and have no need to enter Austin, pretty nice here.

Before you say anything else, better look at the municipal govt's in Houston, Dallas, etc. Austin is just the canary...

You know, just the other day, everyone was in agreement that it was probably not a bad idea to make some things other departments responsibility. Now they just did exactly that, and all y’all are acting like the world is going to end. Get your shit straight.

I am not part of your everyone. Especially since there is no plan and the responsibilities have to have a plan to transition somewhere else even if you wanted to do it, which there is not one. In saying that, $17 million from 911 call center?

I'm hoping these people are just placating the fringe left and redirecting funds from other places.
Or recoding it to take advantage of government funds of some sort.

That still sucks because I'm really bothered that Democrat politicians are sucking up to people that hate this country so much. It's really bothersome.

You are naive if you don't think these cuts to police departments will have a negative effect on their crime fighting, crime prevention, and emergency response capabilities.

Regardless of what is said, this defunding crap is punishment and the result of hatred for the police by a relative small group of loud activists who spew Marxist ideology. All you have to do is listen to a "citizens to be heard" session at a San Antonio City Council meeting to understand what kind of people these city councils are cowtowing to. It should be disturbing to anyone with common sense.

It sounds like most of the funds are just being redirected at breaking some of the services out. Which as you say is fine for placating. However, there are still several millions being cut which are not defined in that report as services just being shifted. That's where you start losing officers.

If the majority truly does not want this to happen they should voice their opinion now and then vote their opinion in the next election. Let's see what Austin really wants.

trav, you favor this 34% defunding move?

Yes, suburban communities do that. Wonder why? Ownership of property is probably the reason. Inner cities get shit tore up because people living there have no skin in the game.

I wonder how many of these moves are motivated by looming pension fund deficiencies?

I think this discussion about Cities is indicative of the major fiscal and political issues driving our national politics. Factually, right now there’s probably a huge budget shortfall for most of our cities. They have to make some budget decisions! Now you factor into that the notions of centralized (Dem) vs localized (Rep) decision making/planning add a pinch of Presidential politics and you’ll get what we have. The ‘defund’ effort is just another way of splitting dollars you don’t have. Here (Granbury) we’ve postponed a planned for jail expansion. So now we’re struggling to find jail space and pay for transport. So, as long as we keep on strangling our economy over this COVID thing, it’s gonna get worse.

So, unless you’re absolutely devoid of grey matter, nothing is going to change until the economy is fully open again. Dems might raise taxes but there’s no blood in the turnip. Reps might enforce laws but people have to eat. I could go on covering different sides of many issues but there are bigger risks than increased number of COVID cases in locking down this economy! I think Austin sucks, but then my nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile away so, JOE, IF YOU THINK I’m going to wear a mask to feed my goats you can kiss my a**!

open it up! An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.

As a builder in Austin I can say it’s far worse than that today

As a pretty hardcore right winger, libertarian type, I’d need to know more about the details to comment.

I can say that all reasonable people know there is no bloat and waste like you find in the government- from feds to municipalities- so cutting nuts, on the surface, doesn’t bother me.

Look at it as requiring them to streamline and get healthy for a change.

PS- I do strongly agree Mac though that the way this is happening, pressure from the left and acquiescence, is terrible and definitely disturbing.

I am just as mad at Abbott using state troopers to fill the gap left in Austin. State money going to one city's bad decisions. IF they want to let crime over-run their city hell let them do it, not the rest of the state's responsibility to fix their stupid.

Of course if this was Houston and not Austin would Abbott do this? Since he lives in Austin.
