What the hell was that? It's amazing the Aggies are still kind of in this football game.
This one is on everyone, but let's start with the coaches. The playcalling has been terrible, the defensive scheme was largely ineffective and there's no desire or hustle from the players.
Offensively, A&M is playing right into Ole Miss's hands. They're trying counters and stretch runs, which allow the speed of the Rebels to work. You run it UP THE MIDDLE, with power. It's very simple. Once you do that, you start moving to other stuff. Running a counter out of your own end zone is baffling.
Zach Calzada really hates opponents who drop 8. He can't figure them out. He's overthrowing guys who are mostly covered and not finding the guys who are open. Jalen Wydermyer was targeted ONCE in the first half. That's it. You can't win that way. The deep middle of the field is open and they're refusing to use it. But the line is getting pushed around, so there's that.
On defense, Ole Miss has 408 yards. 408. In a half. But somehow, the defense has only given up 13 points. A lot of that is due to single players stepping up at key moments, like DeMarvin Leal or Demani Richardson. The amazing thing was that, when Ole Miss got to the 1, it never seemed like they were going to get in. A&M just overwhelmed them.
Everything else has sucked. The tackling has been atrocious. They should have had Ealy for multliple tackles for loss, but instead they couldn't get him to the ground. This is fundamental stuff, and they're not doing it.
While A&M can't even look at the deep middle, Ole Miss is exploiting it repeatedly. Matt Corral has 216 yards passing and his guys are running free in the deep secondary. It seemed like A&M hit on something late in the half, because they started coming with more pressure and got Corral off his game a little bit. But let's be real here -- Lane Kiffin is the only reason A&M's in this ballgame. His stupid insistence on going on 4th down and cooky playcalling can work at times, but they can also backfire.
Ok, you're down 15. If you have any pride, go out there and run the damned football. Go right up the gut, like you did at the end of the half. Don't screw around. On defense, you're going to have to continue to pressure Corral. When you don't, he's eating you up. But they've got to change their scheme behind that. What they're doing isn't working at all.
That was a pitiful performance and should be a challenge to A&M's overall pride. If you've got discipline and grit, it's time to show it. The game is still winnable, but only if you come out and play like a top 10 football team. Because that bunch wasn't anywhere near their ranking.
