Fly Fishing Talk

Spent a little time up in the mountains in NM and went fly fishing for the first time ever. It's pretty foreign to me as an exclusively Texas-residing Aggie, plus the gear is intimidating. But I have to say...fly fishing is a gawdamn blast. Fishing in general I think is one of those things you can do to just go clear your head, but I totally understand now how someone could get into fly fishing, especially if they have access to clear running water.

So, help me out here, Ags...my 17 year old kid who loves fishing has a beginner setup that's got enough action on it to fish for bass, but what do I need to know about fly fishing if I want to really get into it? Are there any places in Texas that have decent fly fishing spots?

When it comes to gear, what do I need to get? Any specific brands of hardware to look for/avoid, or is it like any other hobby where you get what you pay for?

Do you make your own flies or just buy them from a local outfitter when you go?

Let's talk fly fishing. Go.
