I'm told by two BMAs that A&M made this move now because they have their target and want to get him in fast. It seems like this is going to come together rapidly, and they want it to in order to save the recruiting class and keep players currently on the team. Speed is of the essence, in other words.
He is currently a head coach and a name that has already been thrown around in connection with the job.
The deal is not done, so I'm hesitant to say who it is and potentially contribute to blowing it up. But expect this to get completed fast if said head coach is ok with the money. He's plainly interested in making the move.
