It wasn't an important game, both teams are lousy, but it was a Thursday. Why Thursday, I asked? Well it turned out both cities have a few Veteran Day activities planned for the weekend but they have a trophy they award the winning team each year, the Garcia-Lummus Medal of Honor Veteran's Trophy. 1LT Lummus received his MoH at Iwo Jima, was mortally wounded while taking out pillboxes and died a few days after his actions. He was also a jock who played for Baylor and, briefly, the NY Giants. He was a native of Ennis. SGT Garcia received his MoH in 2014 for charging a machine gun head on and then destroying a few bunkers as an infantryman in Vietnam. He died in 2013, the Army sometimes moves a bit slowly when recognizing people, I mean after all people manning desks and typewriters get to decide these things and they're busy. You don't see much public acknowledgment anymore and Veteran's Day is coming up so I thought I'd share.
