Update - with the first game coming up, I figured I'd update anyone interested. My son ended up choosing to attend Colorado State Pueblo in the RMAC. It's crazy the way it all happened after I posted this back in January. The whole recruiting process was so screwed up becuase of Covid and the portal, so it was nothing like we'd been told to expect. He's starting out in Construction Management, which some of his other options didn't have. He was accepted at A&M into Construction Science, so he's into something similar that will give him some options if he ends up transferring back to A&M for any reason or wanting to attend grad school down here (which would be great).
I've got lots of stories so far between a boy and his dad that really make me proud. Right now he's calling me every day after practice, and that's been so cool. I know it won't last, and that's quite alright. While he's still a bit homesick and excited about everything, I'll take what I can get. He started making his mark the first day of working out on July 9, and he kept doing that through fall camp.
Right now, he's running maily with the 2s playing both MLB and Will and seeing some reps with the 1s every now and then. He's starting on KO return, punt return/block and onside KO. He told me last week he realized that if Pueblo ends up receiving after the opening coin toss, he'll be on the field for the first play of the year. He's definitely caught some eyes up there, and that's really neat for parents to hear, as some of you know.
We're excited to head up there this weekend for the first game. Gonna be very neat to see him realize a dream he's been working towards for so long.
Long time listener, first time caller.
Our son is going to have the opportunity to play college football somewhere. He's put lots of work in to make this a reality, and it's very rewarding to see him so close to reaching one of his major goals. Initiallly, it looked like he was going to end up at one of the academies, but he broke a bone in his foot his first night of 7 on 7 after attending the Air Force camp the first week of June, so his camp schedule was blown, which really hurt him. He's been recruited by several of the Lone Star Conference schools, and they've told him they were going to have him in for officials this month, but now they're not returning his texts with definitives. He's got a really good offer to play at a D2 school way out of state, and we're going to visit next weekend. He's not sold on the idea of going so far from home, but he knows he can't discount the fact that there's a staff that really wants him versus some who are just keeping him on the hook right now.
Do any of you have advice for parents who don't know what the hell they're doing with respect to having kid go play somewhere else or D2 versus D3? All of the D3 schools in Texas have offered him, and we'll go to UMHB & Trinity in January, so he'll have the opportunity to play here in the end. I just don't know that I'm good paying $100K for a degree in Texas (after scholarships).
Any advice would be appreciated. I just want to make sure I'm doing the best I can for him as a parent.
