I have a co-worker that is a whorn fan, but because he is married to an Aggie and probably goes to more Aggie games in CS than he does in austin, he is tolerable and realistic' even though he is still loyal to orange. Every year we go to lunch and break down each team and try and come up with realistic opinions on our and each other's team. For the first time in many years we agreed and this is why.
First, we looked at the whorns. The Offense was horrid in big games, including a beating against Arkansas. It is hard to believe that it could be any worse than last year. The OL should be better, but that is not saying it will be good. Last year was just that bad. The QB play can't be worse than last year, because if Heard starts it would mean he beat out Swoopes, but if Swoopes starts he has to had learn something last year. Slightly better play, but still below quality. The whorns might finally see something from their all world RB that has been a major disappointment the last few years. If Gray can stay healthy he might approach 1200 yards and that is if there is better OL play. WR are not great, so this O will have trouble scoring points. The defense has some talent, but it is young and they lose a lot of quality players. We both agreed that Texas will be lucky to win 7 games and both predicted 6 wins for the whorns.
Now for the Aggies. Every position on O should be either equal or better than last year. QB play should be better because of experience and knowledge of the O. RB play should be as good. OL play should be about as good despite loosing a big time tackle. We have the talent to reload and have a lot coming back. WR position is sick and we should see some unique opportunities out of the TE position. Last year we averaged 32.1 points per game. We both saw no reason that this shouldn't increase and wouldn't be surprised in the number wasn't a full TD higher. We won't shit the bed against Alabama this year. Now for the Aggie D. We were pitiful last year, hence a new D coordinator. We ended up ranked 114th in Total D. That was pathetic, but we still managed to win 8 games including a bowl game. Now the Chavis Affect, coupled with more talent and a deeper team. Is it impossible to think that the Aggies could be a Top 50 D? Top 70? If we are a Top 50 D, then we will win at least 10 games. If we are Top 70 then we will win at least 9 games. If Chavis can do more than that and our TO ratio is good, look out. This team can be dangerous. I think we win 10 games and whorn co-worker gave us 9.
We both agreed that TCU and Baylor were the thorn in our collective ass that will dull the shine on the Aggies in the State. Neither of these teams play anyone outside of their crappy league. It is a real possibility they are both undefeated going into game against each other. They would be middle of the pack teams in SEC with TCU loosing 3 games in West and Baylor loosing at least 4.
Hopefully Bowl games will show that the Aggies are the best team in the State of Texas.
