I don’t get it. Did he call a bad game? Sure. But we’re also down some significant guys. Our pass protection is out of the equation if Chase is out. We knew heading into the season that receivers were the weakest part of this team. Sorry guys, we do not have playmakers there. Remove Evan Stewart and Ainias Smith and you have a bunch of guys remaining who will not get consistent separation. It doesn’t matter if it’s Conner or Reed back there. Any QB will struggle with a group of receivers like we have. We also went down to our 3rd string RB last night and Amari is good, but he’s not Owens or Moss good. As much as I want to blame Klein, I’m compelled not to do so given his limitations here. 2 fumbles on an exchange and an interception isn’t Klein’s fault either.
The defense is my main concern. We are long enough into the season that Elko’s excuse of them learning his scheme is completely mute at this point. The flaws we saw against McNeese, Bowling Green, Miss State and LSU came to life tonight. We hated Durkin’s 3 man front but for what it is, his defense never played that horrendous in execution except for maybe against Miami in terms of sloppy tackling. Durkin also did not have this secondary last year. Last night’s defensive performance was so blatantly bad that I have no idea how long it’s been since I’ve last seen that. We looked like a team that could not play defense.
I am way more concerned about the defense than the offense because I’ve seen enough to know that if Klein can get some receiver help he can turn it up a notch. This was the 3rd straight game we have not been prepared defensively. We went down against Miss State, LSU and South Carolina to start the games. That is not an anomaly. That is a trend. It starts with Bateman and ends with Elko.
Zero sacks last night by a d line that is in upper tier of the SEC. Let that sit in.
