The wife and I are taking a cruise for our 15th this summer, sailing out of Seattle. I'm curious about any thoughts on Alaska cruises, since this board is full of old white dudes. There are maybe 6-8 primary destinations on an Alaskan cruise, as far as I can tell. We're going to sail into and out of Seattle, so flying up to Anchorage and cruising down is out. I want to see Ketchikan and Juneau. But there are places like Glacier Bay, Dawes Glacier, Skagway, Sitka, and I'm not sure which of those we'd most like to see. Thoughts?
I also know that some ships go around the islands on their way up/down, sailing in the open Pacific instead of the inward passage. My sister told me she puked her guts up on the way up to Glacier Bay when she took the cruise last year, on the Pacific segment of the journey. I'm curious about thoughts on that as well. Are those rough seas standard or arbitrary?
Also, I'm mortally terrified of bears. When I went hiking in the Cascades last year, my head was on a swivel and my finger was constantly on the trigger of the bear spray. And that was just for black bears, which are fairly docile. The Alaskan coast has fvcking grizzly bears, and I want no part of that. But I love hiking and I'd like to journey out of the towns a bit and up into the hills around them. What's the bear action like, from a first-person perspective? Honestly, I can outrun my wife if it comes down to it, but I'd prefer to keep her safe.
