Okay, I'll admit, last year left me scratching my head a bit, too. But really, even with so much talent, there was so much youth, inexperience and yeah, more injury (sigh). I've said it on other posts. Not a big fan of the odd or 3 man front. I think it was used too much early on last year, even when we weren't that dinged up and it cost us a couple of games. This leads me right into my first point.
Depth - Where should we be strongest this year (in bodies and literal strength, though O Line might argue the point...?!) Yeah, the D Line. For me, it screams, 4 man front. We have numbers across the board, certainly a very good 2 deep, 3 in spots. Now is not the time to get cute. We should be coming at our opponents in waves. The hurry up rules make it difficult to sub, I know, but we should still be sending in fresh guys every series, at the least. Jackson and Nolen should be a big problem for anyone inside. Their backups have played a lot of football. Brownlow-Dindy looked great in the Spring Game. The ends? Wow. Turner, Diggs, Stewart, Overton, Sylla and White... Again, wow! And I haven't even gotten to David Hicks, wherever he plays. That's a lot of really good football players. Use'em.
Discipline - This is the one area where I think Durkin was the most disappointed last season and where he's looking for the most improvement. I believe that's why he took back over the linebackers. We simply have to improve on our assignments. Last season, we were a young team, (still are) and when we lost an experienced guy to injury, you could really see the effect on the rest of the group and team as a whole. It's hard enough when players haven't had that year in the strength and conditioning program. Strong, but not SEC strong. Fast, but not SEC fast. Still, nothing trumps experience. The bull rushes that worked in high school don't work as much. Jumping inside the guard or outside the tackle might seem too "easy" and that's because that's where they wanted you to go. In the prep ranks, you made every play, but here the call may have been for you to hold that gap and wash it to next guy. I've no doubt we have a bunch of smart Ags playing for us, but it takes smart, disciplined, aggression to play great defense. That's what I want to see out of us this season, at all 3 levels.
I haven't mentioned the back 7, but I am hopeful. I believe we're still a bit thin at LB but better than before. Still, we can't be as undisciplined as last year. Plainly, we were abysmal. That has to get better. Teams didn't pass on us because they didn't have to. LBs must be under control and in their gaps, not chasing every play for a home run hit. We saw flashes of it from Russell. Just need a little more consistency. I have more expectations for Harris as well. I think Cooper was just a bit over anxious at times. Durkin will get the kids focused.
I like what we have in the secondary. Big fan of Anderson in the slot. I worry a little about the depth but not the talent. Chappell is a prime scrapper and I see no drop off with Grimes. I think Richardson is out to prove a few points. Again, discipline is key, don't buy the first look and stay deep. We'll be ok.
Rest in Glory, Coach P, and Gig'em!!!
