Garrett named Rotary Lombardi Award finalist

HOUSTON – Texas A&M sophomore defensive end Myles Garrett was named a finalist for the 2015 Rotary Lombardi Award, which is presented annually to the college lineman of the year by the Rotary Club of Houston.

Garrett, from Arlington, Texas, is seeking to become Texas A&M’s second winner of the prestigious award, joining 1998 Rotary Lombardi Award winner Dat Nguyen. Garrett is the fifth Aggie to be named a finalist – Ed Simonini in 1975, Robert Jackson in 1976, Sam Adams in 1993 and Nguyen.

The 46th Rotary Lombardi Award finalists are:

Joey Bosa, Junior, DE, Ohio State

Myles Garrett, Sophomore, DE, Texas A&M

Shaq Lawson, Junior, DE, Clemson

Carl Nassib, Senior, DE, Penn State

Garrett is, arguably, the nation's most disruptive defensive player. Garrett leads the SEC with 10.5 QB sacks, 17.0 tackles for loss (tie) and five forced fumbles, and he ranks in the top five nationally in all three of those statistical categories. He also has 50 tackles, seven QB hurries, a blocked punt and an interception on his 2015 resume.

In addition to being a Rotary Lombardi Award semifinalist, Garrett was named a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award (defensive POY) and a quarter-finalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, and he is on the watch lists for the Hendricks Award (top DE) and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (outstanding defender). He has won Southeastern Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week honors twice in 2015.

One of the few remaining stand-alone NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision collegiate awards, each year the four finalists of the Rotary Lombardi Award travel to Houston for the presentation. While in the community, finalists will make a stop at Texas Children’s Hospital and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center to visit the Front Line Kids, children who are fighting cancer locally in the Houston Medical Center. Since the award’s inception, millions have been raised to help fund cancer research, public education and direct services to cancer patients.

For over 45 years, the award has been presented annually to the nation’s best Division I college football lineman (offense or defense) who, in addition to outstanding performance and ability, best exemplifies the discipline of Vince Lombardi. Head coaches of NCAA FBS teams, all former winners and finalists of the Lombardi Award, and selected members of the media make up the electorate that decides the award winner.

The 2015 honoree will be announced at the Rotary Lombardi Award presentation on December 9, 2015, at the Revention Music Center in downtown Houston, Texas. This year’s Rotary Lombardi Award ceremony will be broadcast by FOX Sports Southwest.
