Good war movies are certainly still being made today as SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, FURY, and HURT LOCKER attest.
But good ole fighter or bomber jock movies?.....none in a very, very long time.
Just re-watched THE BLUE MAX from the 60s...great WWI movie about a German ace's rise and fall from grace. George Peppard starring. I also fondly remember BATTLE OF BRITAIN about both sides in that WWII fight - with a host of good actors.
RED TAILS was OK, but the thrust was to correct racial mis perceptions rather than to relate anything factual re history. The TAILs were good pilots, but their opportunity to go against German fighters was limited because of their close escort mission. I don t believe they produced any aces.
THE HUNTERS is a good film from the late 50s about US F-86 pilots in Korea starring Robert Mitchum, but it the downside is that it makes the foe all Chinese while the facts are that most of if not all enemy aces were Russians.
I would guess that the reason we never saw anything about air to air combat over Vietnam was because North Vietnamese aces outnumbered ours 8-2.
Love for Hollywood to come up with something good using all the visual technology available now.
