My ex-wife’s grandfather was born in the 1880’s in a small town in Florida called Chiefland.

Chiefland is approximately 38 miles or so from Gainesville, Florida so when it came time to go off to college her grandfather, Thomas Lee Clyatt Sr. of course chose the University of Florida.

He wanted to be a lawyer and he was in law school at UF when on a drunken bet he let his “friends” pull out most or all of his teeth.

He bled a good bit and slowly slipped into a coma and died.

In those days the dead were dressed in their best clothes and shoes and then put in a wooden box and then out into the parlor you went so your friends and family could come say goodbye to you before they put you in the ground.

Well Mr. Clyatt's brother lived just across the state line in southeast Georgia and it took him two days to get to Chiefland to come to his deceased brother’s service.

When he get’s there he goes and looks at his brother and to his surprise he believes his brother is breathing ever so slightly…

A few of them check and they agree he’s not dead and they summon the Chiefland doctor to come as fast as he can.

The doctor gets there and confirms Mr. Clyatt is alive and it was touch and go for a few days but he made it… he made it to the age of 90 something dying the final time in the mid 1970’s.

This guy really did have two caskets.

From one of the earlier Bedtime stories if you remember Miss Mable … this would’ve been her father in law.
