The TEXXXAS Expo just can't seem to catch a break.
For the second time in two weeks the organizer of the upcoming adult entertainment expo in Houston has been notified that its booking contract has been terminated at area hotels.
Last week, organizer John Gray learned that the Hilton Houston Southwest in the Galleria area had canceled his Aug. 17-20 booking at that hotel due to concerns raised by a national advocacy group.
The Hilton hotel cancelled the booking, saying that the decision was made in the best interest of other hotel guests.
Just days later Gray announced that he had found another venue, a Holiday Inn location in Southwest Houston.
On Wednesday, the Houston Chronicle learned via The National Center on Sexual Exploitation that that hotel's management team had also canceled the TEXXXAS booking.
Gray once again was scrambling to find a new venue for his adult film-star-laden event.
"I was notified on Tuesday afternoon that they wouldn't let the expo take place there," Gray said of the Holiday Inn location, which is independently owned and operated.
InterContinental Hotels Group is the parent company of Holiday Inn Express. A spokesperson from IHG provided a statement to the Houston Chronicle on Wednesday regarding the cancellation of TEXXXAS.
"We have learned that this independently owned and operated Holiday Inn hotel has made the decision to no longer host the group in question given the heightened sensitivity surrounding this event and in consideration of the safety and comfort of all guests," the statement said.
Porn stars Ron Jeremy, Nina Hartley, Evan Stone, Mia Vallis, Aysia Garza, Cherie Deville, Olivia Austin, Dillion Harper, Brett Rossi and others will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs at TEXXXAS if it ever does occur.
The anti-exploitation group is a national organization known for opposing pornography, linking it to sex trafficking, violence against women, child abuse and addiction.
"After we heard that the TEXXXAS event had been cancelled by Hilton, we reached out to remind IHG executives of the potential harms such an event could have on the local community and of IHG's own policy on pornography. In a clear display of corporate and social responsibility, IHG took immediate action to address the situation," the national organization said in a statement Wednesday.
On a related note, it was earlier this year that a Dallas judge sided with the city government in regards to kicking a similar sex expo, eXXXotica, out of city limits. Mayor Mike Rawlings had fought to keep the convention out of the city, pointing to video shot at a previous event featuring what was described as "nearly-nude women in lingerie" playing with whipped cream.
The event was slated for late May at a convention center owned by the city of Dallas.
Dallas Police Chief David Brown told officials that his department didn't observe any laws broken at that event in years past.
