Why is Stansbury an assistant at A&M?

While we (me included) bitch about Billy Kennedy and the ever sleeping Eric Hyman, I keep seeing people suggest that the easy thing to do would be to promote Stansbury to head coach and go forward with that.

While I'm good with it, it makes me step back and wonder why the hell is this guy at A&M to begin with? He has a successful track record as a head coach and he appears to be under 80 years old, so why wasn't he already a head coach elsewhere? Or why wasn't he an assistant coach on another staff? Was A&M really the best job offer this guy could land? Does he have some kind of baggage that I don't know about?

I can't reconcile how a more qualified head coaching candidate sits on the bench next to the current coach. There has to be a story here and, honestly, I really wasn't paying much attention when he was hired so I wouldn't know it.
