Why a top 60 defense doesn't mean 10 wins

Lots of people are saying a defense ranked X gets us to Y wins.

It will absolutely help, but I don't think it is that simple.

The first reason is turnovers. We were tied for 105th last year at -7. You would have to think that the combination of a better defense and Chavis's scheme gets us more defensive turnovers, so they are definitely correlated. However, I think this will be very important because of...

Close games. We should be in a lot of close games this year. I could see the following being 1 score games either way in the 4th quarter.

ASU
Arkansas
Miss St
Alabama
Ole Miss
Auburn
LSU

That is 7 games that could be decided in the 4th quarter.

In 2010 and 2013 both, Auburn was 6-0 in one score games before the title game.
