I cant find a single metric indicating real progress toward achieving any of vision 2020's primary goals, those being...
--> maintain/reduce student enrollment at 43,000 or at least achieve parity with top 20 public universities
--> increase faculty size by 50% from its current size (1999)
--> increase the number of endowed professorships
--> improve the faculty to student ratio and achieve parity with top 20 national public universities
--> overall, make texas a&m a top 10 public university by 2020
Can anyone point to statistics that show we've achieved meaningful gains in any of these areas -- especially those measured against our "peers" (lol)? As far as i can tell, we've either regressed or struggled to barely maintain our position in all of these areas since this report was drafted.
We've dropped annually in the us news college rankings. Since I first enrolled at a&m in 2002, i think we've dropped over 20 spots -- from the high 40's then to just shy of 70 now -- and we're now ranked 25th best public university in their latest rankings. We were just outside the top 15 when Vision 2020 was originally commissioned. You can bash the us news rankings all you want, but they're the most widely recognized by the general public and -- right or wrong -- have a significant impact on perception and prestige.
Anyway... on a related note, the Vision 2020 master plan also proposed establishing a research park between college station and IAH in north houston. Does anyone know if those plans have materialized any further?
