To Mask or Not to Mask that is the question?

Simple question, do you think wearing a Mask works to stop the spread of Covid-19?

The per capita stuff isn’t real world data attributable to mask wearing, at least not in this country. The data assumes infected people were around people with masks. Once Covid got a foothold it was going to spread. Mask wearing helped the individual but the population was screwed as long as infected people put themselves out in public. Mask wearing likely stemmed the tide but it was not going to push Covid down or eliminate it. Especially since a good portion of this country was too busy deciding whether Covid was a hoax or triggered by some perceived loss of freedom.

"Especially since a good portion of this country was too busy deciding whether Covid was a hoax or triggered by some perceived loss of freedom."

This is just not true people were and still are wearing masks like bank robbers. Some with ridiculous virtual signaling in the car while walking in the park etc. etc.

Wondering when a radio station is going to change its call letters to KCVD or KVID so they can be COVID RADIO all day all the time.

Ok since you want to be so adamant about you being right. What do you know about the National Response Framework and does HHS have a Pandemic Plan? Who is supposed to provide overarching leadership of the large federal government Task Force for planning for National Disasters? What entities belong in that Task Force? Is the Army Corps of Engineers and Army North part of the Task force? How does the Task Force get DOD support?

Why do some countries have much lower pandemic metrics than the US? Was it appropriate for Trump to lie about the pandemic for weeks? Why was FEMA told to start planning the Task Force in late March. Why did the federal government wait until late March to create a cell to order PPEs. By late March we had no control over the pandemic. It controlled us.

- We failed to plan early.
- We failed to act early.
- Trump lied about the pandemic for weeks.
- By the time we started planning it was too late. The pandemic won as it took control of the country.

I could have done a significantly better job preparing for the US for the pandemic. Do you know why? I would have told DHS to dust off the National Disaster Plan and told HHS to dust off their Pandemic Plan. Trump and his administration failed to do these things.

To make matters worse Trump down played the risk by saying it would disappear, it is not going to hit us yada yada yada. In the meantime we have Trump, Pence, Dr. Fauci, Dr. Birx, Dr. Navarro, Mr. Atlas the trade minister yapping away and sometimes contradicting others or outright attacking the credibility of scientists. So not only did Trump and his administration fvck up the response but they fvcked up the strategic communications to the country with contradictory information. My ham sandwich has more intelligence than Trump and his administration.

Go ahead and argue all you want. The fact of the matter is the US has 4% of the worlds population and 20% of the covid metrics. Someone tell me why this is the case.
Trump’s supporters gloss over this completely for obvious reasons.

I want to report something interesting. A few months ago I looked at the death rate in Japan and the US. The US rate was 40 times Japan's. Now it is down to 20 times. I don't know why the metrics have changed.

For anyone who has a program management background, this is straight Risk Mitigation. Sorry if all the science on this board doesn't like it. But honestly, what is so hard?

Needs to be a proven scientific risk. Follow the science.

The risk is spreading the virus to your fellow human through your mouth and nose through droplets. The mitigation is to stop that by wearing a mask and social distancing. Tell me what science I should be following? I got told I got it from my eyes in December. I get it, it's complicated. But mitigate. Just wear a fkn mask until we get out of this. It ain't hard

Cloth masks don't work. CDC says those with vaccine can travel and mingle. Should not need a negative test. Follow the science.

this is the problem, you think because he was president he can do whatever he wants including use wrong numbers. Apparently that’s left to the governors of certain states.
Who here has observed Trump over the years and hasn’t concluded Trump does whatever he wants? He tried to turn a legitimate election using politics pressure under false ideas because he knows he can do and say what he wants. Fortunately, he didn’t get his way but very often those tactics work to his advantage and he (we) all know it.

Would you prefer scientists stick with whatever they originally believe and never change their minds? I don’t understand that approach.

He said in March of 2020 “wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it's not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is.”

The next month he said, and has now for a year, that was not accurate info for a novel disease we didn’t know a lot about.

I don’t understand the hate for changing a position. We don’t use leaches anymore or think the sun revolves around the earth because we learn and change. I’d think that’s what we want scientists to do.
The moment Fauci didn’t completely and blindly follow Trump and become his personal puppet, Trump placed Fauci against him. The moment that happened the Trumpkins despised Fauci.

Pretty simple formula to get where we got with Fauci for at least half the country.

What other science do I follow? The drink bleach one? Or just get sick and use horse dewormer?

I think I will stick with the CDC.

I don’t like Biden either. He is basically president by default. Democrats realized the party was too far left and overnight said look, the Obama retread guy will win this. The moment the political advisors said he wild win, Trump started creating conspiracies on why he would lose.

Do you think I I want higher taxes? Do you think I want more government in my face? Most of us just want to be in the middle and not feel like we are voting for the Empire in Star Wars. Trump lied to us all day everyday, that’s not cool but became normalized.

I would really like the party to improve and attract new voters over trying to blame others. The country is changing and the party needs to change too.
Perfect

YOURE NOT DRAGGING ME BACK INTO THIS QUAGMIRE, @CheekySchneider. I PREFER TO FOCUS MY EFFORTS ON SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE LIKE SUPPORTING AGGIE FOOTBALL OR TRASHING @rivalsmike
I’m so late to this thread. I think I read it initially and dropped it w/o noticing it gained so much traction. I prefer to be ignored.

Have an excellent day!

Some people are....but you can’t use data Covid infection data that supposes the entire country is wearing them correctly to postulate that masks do not work.

do we just follow the WHO? Maybe just maybe no one really knows what they’re talking about it.

Science has proven that cloth masks are ineffective. Also look at Ca. and you will see real world evidence.

people don’t like fauci because he is a fear porn peddling mascot for the left who advocated destroying the economy and the livelihoods of millions of people for something we didn’t totally understand, but have known for a while now had a 99.X% survival rate for the vast majority of people in the workforce. All from the comfort of his high paying taxpayer funded perpetual job.

Translation: Trump’s team messed up so bad that it will take more than a few months to change the statistical trajectory of the pandemic.

LOL

it wasn’t so long ago that you were clamoring about how important stronger leadership with respect to the virus was while you were ignoring government guidelines and working the recreational kids sports circuit.

Crazy. You think that happened?

Now that is a true statement. He made more than the President (in base). He has also been a 40-year civil servant and is also a doctor in charge of handling a pandemic that has killed half a million Americans. I made more than him last year. Maybe he should have gone into private practice.

If I were him I would just retire. The man has been completely s#it on for just doing his job. He went through the AIDS problem in the 1980s. He's worked for the lefties and the righties. Sorry, you have to wear a mask, I don't like it either. I keep three in my car in case I forget.

Fauci has earned many of the most prestigious awards available to a person in his field, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Science, and the Mary Woodard Lasker Award for Public Service. In 2019, he was among the inaugural class inducted into the Government Hall of Fame.

Fauci also has been awarded 45 honorary doctoral degrees from universities around the world and is a member of such organizations as the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society.

I'm sure some of you can top that but lemme know.

Yeah, but he changed his opinion once to something trumpers don’t like so he’s an idiot and somehow only wants power (not sure how that makes any sense but it’ll be said)

What do you think that clip showed? It was Rand Paul speaking and giving no chance for Fauci to actually answer his questions. I suspect because he didn't want him to actually answer them. It wasn't Rand Paul actually seeking answers to legitimate questions he had. That might have been useful to all of us.

I don't see how that supports any arguments at all on either side. It was a non educated in medicine politician yelling at someone for a couple minutes. I guess it was neato and all, but that's about it.

1. Rand Paul has an MD.
2. The clip showed Fauci making one statement that he has since contradicted per the link on the tweet. He originally said we needed to wear masks even if vaccinated due to variants and more recently said the concern of variants affecting us after being vaccinated are overblown.
3. The questions were legitimate even if he didn’t give him time to answer.

I agree the questions are legitimate. But it’s grandstanding to ask them and not allow the witness to respond.

I think Fauci’s reluctance to say fully vaccinated people don’t need masks is odd too. He originally said that you could still be a carrier. I just don’t see how that clip is a useful piece of evidence for anything.

It’s not evidence for anything except that the expert’s opinion du jour is not to be taken as scripture as it is constantly changing. Evolving your ideas isn’t a bad thing but in a lot of circles his current idea is presented as fact and he’s been wrong a lot so maybe we can present it as one expert’s view that may or may not be correct. Idk

No.

Let’s kill the economy and then figure out how this thing works.

I heard an interesting interview yesterday of someone who worked on the pandemic Warp Speed response team for Trump. Forgive me I did not catch his name in time. He was called on for the logistics part. Some of the comments made were......"He (Fauci) really liked the cameras".....(paraphrasing this part) "He (Fauci) had a reputation to uphold from the HIV situation years before so he seemed to be constantly changing his opinions and flip-flopping so that in the end he could point back and say he was right no matter what the outcome was". He also said that the team and especially Trump were frustrated with Fauci because of his constant mixed messaging. Pretty interesting interview. Sheds some light on this conversation.
