How does A&M assemble #GigEmGang17?
You may have heard this before, but it looks like A&M has four extra scholarships it can use on the 2017 class. It also has at least one other it can use against the 85, with Justin Manning’s retirement. While obviously a lot will change between now and national signing day 2017, we can at least start to get an idea of where A&M needs to place their emphasis. First, a look at who they’re losing:
QB: 2 certain losses (Trevor Knight, Conner McQueen)
RB: No certain losses
WR: 4 certain losses (Boone Niederhoffer, Josh Reynolds, Ed Pope, Jeremy Tabuyo); one likely loss (RSJ)
OL: 2 certain losses (Avery Gennesy, Jermaine Eluemunor)
DE: 1 certain loss (Daeshon Hall); 1 likely loss (Myles Garrett)
DT: 1 certain loss (Hardreck Walker)
LB: 3 certain losses (AJ Hilliard – unless he gets a medical redshirt – Shaan Washington, Claude George)
DB: 2 certain losses (Justin Evans and Alex Sezer)
So a 2017 position grouping (scholarship players ONLY) looks something like this:
QB (2): Jake Hubenak, RS-Sr.; Nick Starkel, Soph. or RS-Fr.
RB (5 or 6): James White, RS-Sr.; Keith Ford, RS-Sr.; Kendall Bussey, RS-Soph.; Trayveon Williams, Soph.; Rakeem Boyd, Soph. or RS-Fr. (also, possibly Jay Bradford, RS-Soph.)
TE/H-back (2): Jordan Davis, Jr.; Aaron Hansford, Soph.
WR (9): Speedy Noil, Sr.; Christian Kirk, Jr.; Damion Ratley, Sr.; Jamal Jeffery, Sr.; Kemah Siverand, RS-Soph.; Frank Iheanacho, RS-Jr.; Clyde Leflore-Chriss, Soph.; Quartney Davis, Soph.; Kendrick Rodgers, RS-Fr.
OL (11): Koda Martin, RS-Jr.; Tank Davis, RS-Jr.; Erik McCoy, RS-Soph.; J.J. Gustafson, Sr.; Keaton Sutherland, Jr.; Connor Lanfear, Jr.; Trevor Elbert, RS-Soph.; Austin Anderson, RS-Fr.; Riley Anderson, RS-Fr.; Kellen Diesch, RS-Fr.; Colton Prater, RS-Fr.
DE (4): Qualen Cunningham, Sr.; Jarrett Johnson, Sr.; James Lockhart, Jr.; Alton Robinson, RS-Fr.
DT (6 or 7): Daylon Mack, Jr.; Zaycoven Henderson, Sr.; DeShawn Washington, RS-Jr.; Kingsley Keke, Jr.; Justin Madubuike, Soph.; Reggie Chevis, RS-Sr. (Maybe TD Moton, RS-Fr.)
OLB (4): Otaro Alaka, RS-Jr.; Richard Moore, Jr.; Riley Garner, Jr.; Dwaine Thomas, Jr.
MLB (2 or 3): Tyrel Dodson, Soph.; Josh Walker, Sr. (Maybe AJ Hilliard, RS-Sr., if he gets a medical redshirt and even wants to play)
S (7): Armani Watts, Sr. (yes, he could go early, but let’s just project he stays); Justin Dunning, Jr.; Larry Pryor, RS-Soph.; Moses Reynolds, RS-Fr.; Clifford Chattman, RS-Fr.; Ikenna Okeke, Soph.; Donovan Wilson, Sr.
CB (7): Nick Harvey, Sr.; Priest Willis, RS-Sr.; Roney Elam, RS-Soph.; Deshawn Capers-Smith, Jr.; Charles Oliver, Soph.; Travon Fuller, Soph., Victor Davis, RS-Sr.
P (1): Braden Mann, Soph.
PK (1): Daniel LaCamera, Jr.
That gives you around 62 to 65 spots filled before attrition. So let’s go for the max at 27, and include for the sake of argument the three commits A&M already has.
QB: Needs at least one, preferably two (currently has Tate Martell committed)
RB: One or two, depending on the depth of the class
TE: One or two.
WR: Four (Manny Neatherly is currently committed, so three more)
OL: Four
DE: Three
DT: Three
LB: Four at least
Safety: Two
Corner: Two or three (Devin Morris is committed, so one or two more)
What’s up with Tate Martell?
When A&M’s offer of Hawaii QB Tua Tagovailoa came out yesterday, Las Vegas Bishop Gorman QB Tate Martell sent out a pair of tweets talking about the importance of trust and how it had been a little shaken. Those tweets didn’t stay up long – he pretty quickly deleted them.
In the meantime, he did talk to Mark about the situation and said he was a little upset about the offer to Tagovailoa, especially with all the effort he’d already put in to the ’17 class. Not surprisingly, the coaches were anticipating that kind of reaction and promised that Noel Mazzone would call Martell and iron things out. It looks like that’s what happened.
The Tagovailoa offer looks like a fallback move in case something were to happen with Martell. The Aggies had to scramble to come up with a QB in this class after the Murray/Allen fiasco and don’t want to be caught flat-footed again. Interestingly enough, not all of the coaching staff was aware of the offer being extended.
A&M will probably work very hard to keep Martell happy, because he’s not only likely the best QB in this class, but is the linchpin to A&M’s recruiting efforts. And they know it.
A&M gets Ingram’s attention (Fletch)
When you think of DeSoto, you think of Von Miller and Cyrus Gray. It has been a long time since A&M landed a player form DeSoto, but A&M hopes to buck that trend as they offered DeSoto offensive guard Edward Ingram. The six foot, three inches, 315-pound OL already has offers from Arizona State, Baylor, Houston, LSU, and UCLA. Ingram was excited about the A&M offer.
“I am really thankful for the offer,” he said. “Coach Moorhead was the coach who offered me and I was invited to the junior day and I told him I was excited to be attending their junior day.”
Even though it is early in his process, Ingram already has two things that he is looking for when trying to decide what school is the best fit for him.
“I want a school that has a friendly environment,” he said. “I also want a campus that is easy to get and get around campus from class to class.”
Ingram will be attended the Baylor junior day the before heading down to A&M for their junior day on Sunday. While at the A&M junior day, Ingram got to learn a lot about A&M and also meet other kids on junior day,
“It was a great visit at A&M,” he said. “They told me a lot about academics which was big to me. I also got to meet the 2017 commits and they all really want me at A&M.”
Ingram will try to make a visit down to A&M this year for a game depending on his schedule.
“I want to make a game down there this year,” he said. “It all depends on when my bye week is this season.”
Manning gets offer, recruited hard by #GigEmGang17 (Fletch)
Lancaster 2017 wide receiver Omar Manning had an amazing playoff run last season that saw him get offers from schools such as Arizona State, Houston, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, UCLA, and Washington. At the fist A&M junior day, Manning added an offer from A&M and was thrilled with his experience at the junior day.
“The A&M visit was absolutely great,” he said. “The A&M coaches were happy to see me there and really want me at A&M so they offered me.”
Manning got the chance to meet Tate Martell and other members of the 2017 recruiting class and the 2017 commits worked hard on trying to get Manning committed to A&M.
“Martell and others pressed hard for me to commit to A&M,” he said. “They all really wanted me to commit at the junior day, but I want to take my time before deciding on where to commit to.”
