Position battle update

We’re starting to see a few of these clear themselves up, and there are a lot of battles now for backup jobs. The starters are almost entirely set.

Left guard: Keaton Sutherland appears the clear winner. Jeremiah Stuckey and Jermaine Eluemunor are now practicing on the right side.

Cornerback: Brandon Williams has been seeing time with the 1s, but Nick Harvey got high praise from the coaches this week. The scrimmage tomorrow could be a difference maker.

Backup center: Erik McCoy wins. Kind of a stunner, but the coaches are thrilled with his development.

Middle linebacker: Battle continues between Hilliard and Walker. Walker may have the edge simply due to the number of snaps he’s received, but again, the scrimmage tomorrow will be a big deal.

Don’t be fooled by a depth chart

If something were to happen to Avery Gennesy, Germain Ifedi would almost certainly move over to left tackle and either J.J. Gustafson or Koda Martin would move in at right tackle.

Mack starts to make his move

Freshman DT Daylon Mack got his first snaps with the second team this week, and he’s starting to make his presence felt. He’s had to adjust to the pace of the college game and get himself slimmed down a bit, but the remarkable strength and quickness for his size has started to show up. He’s still not in the two deep, but he’s moved up and is starting to position himself for some playing time sooner as opposed to later. The idea would likely be to get him between 10 to 15 snaps and let him go full speed while he’s out there.

Big Vistor For Saturday's Scrimmage (Rob)

The Aggies are hosting at least one important visitor for Saturday's Scrimmage, Manvel four star safety Deontay Anderson will be on hand to watch the scrimmage and spend some time with the coaches and players.

Despite showing signs at one point in his recruitment that the Aggies might not be in the race, as the landscape has changed some Anderson has kept the Aggies in the mix.

Anderson has released a top 5 of A&M, USC, LSU, Ole Miss and Texas. He will officially visit USC and Texas during the season and the other three after the season.

Anderson is ranked the fifth best safety in the country and comes in at number 53 in the Rivals100.

Rob’s stab at who might redshirt

It is that time in camp where everyone begins to wonder which of the incoming freshmen might redshirt and which will see the field immediately.

It may still be a little early but I'll take a stab at it based on what I have seen and heard.

Those players I believe will redshirt:

Jay Bradford - Makes sense for the situation
Roney Elam - coach Joseph mentioned him when asked about young players and stressed the urgency for him to get bigger.
Trevor Elbert - He won’t play this season and it just makes sense
Connor Lanfear - Same as Elbert
Kemah Siverand - He has not been in the mix in camp early and A&M is plenty stocked at receiver.

Those who will play:

Kendall Bussey - He clearly will be needed for depth
Jake Hubenak – already redshirted, so he may as well get some experience
Jordan Davis - Extra time on campus has helped Davis a lot.
Justin Dunning - He will play and play a lot.
Landis Durham - He is one I thought might redshirt but seems to have made enough ground up to be in the rotations where they need it.
Justin Evans - Will start and do well.
Riley Garner - He has been a pleasant surprise this camp and will play.
Claude George - Will play
Kingsley Keke - I'm still a little skeptical but still think he sees the field.
Christian Kirk - Will start
Daniel LaCamera - Will play
James Lockhart - Will play
Daylon Mack - Will play
Erik McCoy - Will play
Richard Moore - Will play
Kyler Murray - Will play
Larry Pryor - Will play
Keaton Sutherland - Will play
Dwaine Thomas - Will play

The ones I am not sure on yet:

Deshawn Capers-Smith - I'm not sure on him yet and haven't seen much from him in camp.
Damion Ratley - I have seen him some but not much, they likely won't need him.

The buzz after Martell’s commitment (Fletch)

After Tate Martell committed to say social media had little reaction to it is an understatement. The announcement was retweeted over 2,500 times. Almost all of the commits who are on Twitter regularly retweeted the announcement. Langham Creek 2016 wide receiver and A&M commit Quartney Davis tweeted at him that he made a “great choice”. The attention even drew the eyes of some key targets in 2016 and 2017. In 2017, Frisco offensive lineman Jack Anderson pondered the thought on Twitter about blocking for Martell. It also caught the attention of one Greg Little who retweeted the commitment.

Sumlin taking pages out of Stoops recruiting book (Fletch)

A poster mentioned this last night, but it really is true. When Oklahoma was a top ten team every year, they had a solid west coast pipeline going. Sumlin is building his own west coast pipeline and should have a lot easier time of selling kids to play at A&M than Stoops did while at Oklahoma. A&M can offer kids on the west coast a chance to play in the SEC without having to travel three time zones to do it. The pipeline is strong in Arizona and if A&M lands N’Keal Harry and Byron Murphy, it will be safe to say A&M owns that state better than Arizona or Arizona State. They then traveled to Nevada and got a commitment from Tate Martell. If A&M lands his teammates Tyjon Lindsey and Haskell Garrett they will have that state lockdown too. Next stop, California which historically is difficult for any non Pac-12 school to recruit in especially in the Los Angeles area. It will take a while to build anything in California, but a few 10 win seasons and a solid commitment to recruit west coast could open a few doors for A&M. The one player A&M might be able to get from California in 2016 is Long Beach cornerback Jack Jones. When A&M offered Jones, he was really fired up about the offer because it was his first SEC offer and it meant a lot to him. If A&M does not get him in for an official visit, A&M has no chance in landing him.

Aggies impress top ’16 DE (Courtney)

About two weeks ago McKinney North Rivals250 strongside defensive end Justin Madubuike visited three schools back-to-back-to-back; TCU, Texas and Texas A&M.
"It was my second visit to A&M," said Madubuike. "That was the last visit I took this summer...I visited Baylor right after finals and that's it."
Two of the programs sent a message that stuck with the four-star prospect.
"They are all great visits for sure. UT stuck out and Texas A&M stuck out," said Madubuike. "UT it's the personal relationship with the coaches. I just felt at home and Texas A&M has great coaches and facilities. It's going to be a hard decision for sure."
Madubuike said the decision is not just between Texas and A&M.
"I still want to take a visit to Notre Dame and OU," said Madubuike.
Madubuike visited A&M with his mom and dad. It was their second time visiting, so Madubuike said they knew how to approach the visit when it came to questions and conversation with the coaches.
"The defensive coordinator, from LSU, he is pretty cool, and I hear he knows what he is doing," said Madubuike. "They are going to have a good defense this year."
Madubuike plans on making a third trip to Aggieland.
"I want to make an A&M game, Texas game and a TCU game. I want to see what the atmosphere is like and determine do I see myself here."
Madubuike has not made specific plans regarding those games, and he knows he will take an officiants Notre Dame, although he is not sure when yet.
