A closer look at Kent State’s offense
First things first: the teams they’re playing here absolutely stink. As in the worst in the FBS level stink. But this does give you an idea of what they do.
Kent State operates out of the spread and like wire splits to spread defenses out. But that doesn’t mean they’re all throw. They’re actually run heavy and have three capable backs. They like the RPO and you’ll see their line operate like they’re running (guards and tackles pulling) and then throw. But they like running dive plays right up the gut, but Crum is a threat to pull it and run off tackle.
Crum is highly accurate, but does not have much zip on his fastball. If he throws it moderate to deep, he has to wind up. But they don’t do much of that; they run very quick routes, so when Crum decides he’s throwing, they’re in position already. That means a lot of 8 yard outs, quick flanker screens and fast crossing routes. And they go extremely fast when they get moving.
The key to stopping these guys will be sure tackling, especially out on the edges. This will be a very big game for Antonio Johnson , Aaron Hansford and Demani Richardson. They’re going to have to get on guys and take them down fast. DeMarvin Leal will have to control the middle (good luck stopping him). The key here is to get the Golden Flashes off schedule. They’re all tempo. Screw that up and they’re toast.
Another thing: their wideouts are small. Myles and Jaylon Jones could really screw up their timing by simply bodying them at the line of scrimmage. Crum could pull the ball, look up and find no one home, putting him at risk of a hit from the defensive front.
Injury/Suspension update
Hezekiah Jones is out. Jayden Peevy (ankle) is questionable. He may be held out. We have not heard definitely on McKinnley Jackson or Micheal Clemons, but don’t count on them playing.
expect more substituting tomorrow
it’s going to be very hot tomorrow with temps well over 100 degrees on the field. I noted this earlier in the week, but expect a lot more substituting than you might see normally. It’s an opportunity to get more guys some playing time and makes sure you keep everyone healthy. Due to the pace of the KSU offense, A&M may sub in waves on defense tomorrow.
Recruiting bits (Courtney)
I was at the Dickinson vs Ridge Point game on Thursday evening. Dickinson has two A&M commits in Donovan Green and Pattrick Williams Jr. It was a close battle all throughout the game, but Dickinson ended up coming up short. Due to the long travel for Dickinson— seeing how it was an away game in Missouri city—they immediately got onto the bus, so I was not able to talk to the two A&M Commit’s. I do know that Donovan Green will be in College Station tomorrow for the game.
Dickinson will be on the road again next weekend and facing two A&M commits at Katy.
