First big recruiting weekend of the spring arrives

Here's a list of who the Aggies will have in town this weekend:

Milton, Ga. 2022 5-star DL Lebbeus Overton - official visit

Liberty DE Micaiah Overton

Austin Westlake 4-star DL Colton Vasek

Jacksonville, Fla. 4-star CB Sharif Denson

New Orleans 3-star OL Tyree Adams

New Iberia, La. 4-star S Derek Williams

Orlando, Fla. 4-star RB Cedric Baxter

Odessa Permian 4-star OL Harris Sewell

Dripping Springs 4-star QB and Baylor commit Austin Novosad

Marlin 3-star LB Derion Gullette

Seattle 4-star CB Caleb Presley

Montgomery, Ala. 4-star DE James Smith

Montgomery, Ala. 4-star DE Jaquavious Russaw

Overton's visit a big deal, but likely not the end

LT Overton's official visit this weekend is a big deal, obviously, and it's the headliner for sure. But his recruitment isn't over yet. After saying he'd like to make a decision at the end of March or early April, he's now got officials set up at Ohio State and Oklahoma that will take him into late April. A decision may not come until may.
The Aggies are in good shape with Overton, but they've got to figure out how they'll add his brother as they're now a package deal. OU is the primary competition, and they'll get last shot.
What happens with Overton could have an impact on another 5-star, 2023 DL David Hicks. The number 2 player in the nation seems like he's got A&M and OU at the top of his list, as Overton does -- even though he's visiting Austin this weekend. It's quite possible that if Overton picks one school, Hicks would go to the other, but both Jimbo and Brent Venables would try to move heaven and earth to get both.

Novosad may be A&M's top QB option now

The Aggies aren't going to get in on Arch Manning. That ship seems to have never left the dock, and I get the sense the A&M staff isn't as high on him as other programs are. So, with the departure of Eli Holstein, Baylor commit Austin Novosad is coming to visit.
This isn't for the proverbial bleeps and giggles, or just for fun. There's mutual interest here and I would be shocked if A&M didn't just offer him, but try very hard to flip him. Getting a quarterback in every class is a priority, and you can build around them. The Aggies definitely did that with Conner Weigman and they'd like very much to do that again this year.

Aggies checking out RB options

For a while, it looked like it was Rueben Owens or bust for the Aggies at running back in 2023, but not anymore. With Owens seriously leaning back towards Texas (at least, they think he is), the Aggies are broadening their search. This weekend, they've got Cedric Baxter coming in from Orlando and they had College Station's own 3-star Marquise Collins in on Wednesday. Collins has a ton of offers, but A&M would be a real step up in comparison to the rest of the group.

Oh, so that's where y'all are

Devon Achane has taken part in a few practices, even though I have yet to see him. But he's also running track and is at a meet in Austin this weekend. He ran a personal best 10.14 100 meters this morning to win his heat. Center Bryce Foster won his first outdoor shot put competition by throwing the shot more than 59 feet.
Both wore their numbers upside down, since the Longhorn was on the top.

Aggies not taking any chances

As we've seen, quarterback recruiting is seriously difficult and just as important. So A&M is getting out to a fast start. This weekend, they offered 2025 QB Stone Saunders (now THAT'S a football name) out of Harrisburg, PA. Today, they offered 2026 QB Isaiah Arriaza out of Los Angeles. Yeah, an 8th grader.
LSU offered Willis 2024 QB DJ Lagway (who was at A&M's practice yesterday) for both football and baseball earlier this week. A&M and coach Schlossnagle followed suit this morning.

Buzz checking the transfer wire already

A&M's season isn't over yet, but the Aggies are already looking to next season. They're seriously interested in a pair of transfers and an LSU decommit.

Senior guard Erik Stevenson from South Carolina (via Wichita State and Washington) entered the portal yesterday, 10 days after Frank Martin was fired. Stevenson started all 31 games for the Gamecocks and averaged 11.4 points a game. A&M's not alone in their interest; at least three other SEC teams have offered as well.

Texas Tech 6-foot-7 small forward Terrence Shannon said he was entering the transfer portal shortly after he scored 8 points in Tech's Sweet 16 loss to Duke. Shannon, a junior, may be looking to upgrade schools (he's reportedly interested in Kansas), but could also enter the NFL Draft. All the same, A&M has offered him out of high school and has allegedly reached out already.

2019 Kentucky Mr. Basketball Dontaie Allen has also put his name in the portal. The redshirt sophomore considered Kentucky his "dream school", but he never really got rolling with Big Blue. Still, A&M is one of many schools to offer since he went in yesterday. He only averaged 2.4 PPG in 19 games last season, but Henry Coleman averaged about the same at Duke -- and they'd love to have him back.

After LSU fired Will Wade for cause, 5-star SF Julian Phillips de-committed. The 6-foot-8 small forward apparently has legitimate interest in the Aggies, as he's noticed their play of late. A&M will have to fight off the likes of Villanova and UCLA (as well as LSU) to get him, but they're got the lines of communication open.
