What got under Nick's skin?

As I noted yesterday, it's a thin skin when he loses. And he not only lost to A&M on the field last year, but he lost to them in the recruiting wars. I saw one guy say that there were 8 5-stars A&M got that Saban wanted and that riled him up, but that's not quite accurate. But if you look at just the 2022 class, the Aggies hit Alabama pretty darned hard. Here's a list of players the Tide had targeted that A&M got:

LT Overton (final 4)

Le’Veon Moss (once committed to Alabama)

Denver Harris (final 3)

Anthony Lucas (final 3)

Enai White (runner up)

Chris Marshall (finalist)

Theo Ohrstrom (finalist)

And here's a look at 2023 prospects the two schools are fighting for:
4-star CB Tony Mitchell
4-star WR Hykeem Williams
5-star WR Shelton Sampson (LSU is the bigger threat here)
4-star WR Jalen Hale
4-star OL Miles McVay
3-star OL Tyree Adams
5-star DL David Hicks
4-star CB Javien Toviano
4-star CB Malik Muhammad
4-star CB Caleb Presley
5-star LB Anthony Hill
3-star LB Derion Gullette

A&M's recruiting has developed to the point where it is not fighting Texas and Oklahoma the most for prospects; it's fighting Alabama and Georgia.

Comments on the Jimbo-Saban blowup
We've talked to some recruits, big money people and folks at other programs since this situation went Chernobyl yesterday and it's been interesting to hear what they have to say.
Recruits seemed to like the fact that Fisher went to the mat for his players and their families. "He showed he'll fight for his people and he don't care who he fights," one told us. Another said, "Why they go after A&M for that stuff? Everybody else does it too."

One coach who worked with Jimbo and Saban told The Athletic that they believed Saban went after Fisher because he (Jimbo) had beaten Saban and he couldn't stand it. I heard something similar from a coach at another program, who figured Saban mentioned A&M in particular because he considers them a threat.
"He just thought he'd put another coach on blast and Jimbo wouldn't take it personally. But he implied Jimbo and A&M cheated and Jimbo's beaten him now, so he wasn't intimidated. It's a bad look for both but I get why Jimbo did it."
"Not sure why Saban did that but maybe he's scared A&M has the money to beat him in NIL," another coach said. "He also doesn't know what to do when a coach says he'll kick his ass and then does it."

One of the big money types was convinced Saban mentioned A&M on purpose with the sole reason of riling up Alabama donors to give more to their NIL programs. The backlash, however, fired up A&M backers just as much if not more so.
"You think the wallets didn't open up Wednesday night?" he said. "He may have just helped A&M win 2023 recruiting too."

It's interesting: the common sentiment among coaches is that A&M isn't cheating. Then again, there are no real firmly defined rules. One thing that Saban and Fisher agree on is that there needs to be uniform NIL rules, and it looks like that will fall to federal legislation (which is both ridiculous because of how bad the NCAA looks and almost impossible to see happening in a mid-term election year). So whether or not it's good for college football or sustainable, as Saban says it isn't, it's like to continue for the foreseeable future. And that would seem to help A&M.

Where the mid-term enrollees seem to fit for '22 after spring ball
This is a little bit of guesswork, but judging from what we've seen, it sounds reasonable.
DT Walter Nolen: Potential two-deep with significant PT
DE Enai White: A&M needs a speed rusher, so that gives him a shot at the two-deep
CB Smoke Bouie: Likely a backup, but could see return duties on special teams
RB Le'Veon Moss: Backup, with a shot at carries
WR Chris Marshall: If he's ready, competing for a starting spot
TE Donovan Green: See Marshall.
OL Kam Dewberry: Likely competing for a backup spot on the right side of the line (guard or tackle)
OL Hunter Erb: Backup as he develops
OL PJ Williams: Backup as he develops
DE/DT Jadon Scarlett: Have to figure out where he'll play first
DE Malick Sylla: Same situation as Enai White
LB Martrell Harris: Considering how quickly Ish Harris came along, he could be fighting for the two-deep.
S Jacoby Mathews: Two-deep player
WR Noah Thomas: Lot of clutter at receiver, but he could fight for the two-deep
TE Theo Ohrstrom: Backup as he gets used to the American game
DE Shemar Stewart: Fighting for a spot in the two-deep
LT Overton: Likely a backup as he continues to grow physically. He's a year younger than most guys. But he's also very good, so don't count him out.
OL Mark Nabou: Backup at one of the guard spots
PK Ethan Moczulski: Backup placekicker to Caden Davis

Visits beginning soon
Believe it or not, we're only two weeks away from having the first official visitors on campus for the 2023 class. Right now, 4-star OL Miles McVay (see above) will be the first in on the 3rd of June. A&M has camps going on the weekends of the 10th and 17th, and those weekends are likely to be well-attended in terms of officials.

Aggies offer FCS standout linebacker
A&M clearly hasn't gone into the transfer portal much, especially when you consider they're still over the 85-man roster limit. But they have made a quick move this week for former James Madison LB Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey. He's not very big (5'10", 215), but he's extremely fast and very productive. Last season, he was an FCS All-American with 113 tackles, 2 sacks and 4 interceptions. He would likely jump right into the rotation as the third linebacker, like Edgerrin Cooper was last year -- meaning he'd play starter's minutes at both positions.
Tucker-Dorsey is officialling at UCF this weekend, and is likely going to visit Texas. But there's also a pretty good chance he visits A&M, and you know how those things have gone lately.

Courtneys tidbits:
Denton Guyer 2023 four-star safety Peyton Bowen spoke one-on-one with AggieYell earlier this week about the latest in his recruiting process.

(Bowen verbally committed to Notre Dame January 1, 2022.)

(AY) where do you stand in your recruiting process?

(PB) I am good with Notre Dame… Like I think… I think I’m pretty solid. I still talk to those other coaches, but… I’m good. I’m good.

(AY) Who are the other coaches that you talk to?

(PB) Oregon, Michigan, A&M and OU. And then Bama.

(AY) do you plan to take your official visits?

(PB) Um, as of right now, i’m not sure.

The most recent visit I’ve been on is an unofficial to Texas A&M. It was the week before the spring game. It was good. They really made a great first impression on me— just how easy it was to talk to the coaches, I liked the practice, the facilities and College Station. It was really cool. I really liked it.

(AY) what is it about these schools that makes you want to keep talking to them?

(PB) there is a long time before signing day. Anything can happen.

(AY) what would it take for the schools to outdo Notre Dame ?

(PB) I just really have to build a connection with them. I have to see if that’s home for me. I would need to see if their education is good, like life after football.

(AY) when you decided on Notre Dame what was it that they had that made you want to commit?

(PB) The connection with the staff and with some of the commits… That’s what really helped me. At school with a great education, and great football is topping on the cake.

(AY) what do mom and dad think?

(PB) my parents want me to go on my OV’s, but they are really locked in on Notre Dame.

(AY) they want you to go on your official visits, so why is it a maybe for the official visits right now? Is it Notre Dame?

(PB) Yeah, there’s some stuff going on with that aspect (and that’s all I can say.)

(AY) your last visit, was Texas A&M for an unofficial, what was it like with those coaches?

(PB) I had a good one on one talk with (DJ) Durkin and Jimbo (Fisher). We talked about where they see me fitting in, and why they offered me so late.

(AY) why did they offer you so late?

(PB) they were waiting for me to come up there really. They wanted to see me in person. They don’t want to offer someone and have to pull the offer.
