Byron Murphy from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro looked the part of a top-50 prospect Thursday night, though in a losing effort against Peoria Centennial in the Phoenix area's biggest game of the week.
Murphy had two long touchdown catches, knocked away a few passes in coverage and also showed some good vision in the return game. On the first TD he sneaked behind the corner for an easy 45-yard strike, and on the second TD he caught about a 10-yard comeback, made his man miss and was gone down the sideline. Corner might still be his best position but don't completely rule out offense as a possibility for him at the next level. He has some serious ability with the football in his hands.
On the recruiting front, Murphy told me Christian Kirk (former teammate at Saguaro) and Priest Willis (former teammate at Marcos de Niza) being in College Station is a big deal to him. He's all set to visit campus in October and can't wait to continue building a relationship with the coaches.
Murphy also has set an official with Washington for late September when the Huskies host Cal, and he's also been chatting with Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA and USC -- though it would be safe to say that the Aggies should feel really good about where they stand at this point. He probably will wait until the U.S. Army All-American Game to announce a decision.
