Are doing a double take...

"Symbolic of this weird season to date is Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who happens to have the same record in his last 11 starts (10-1) as Carson Wentz of the Super Bowl champion Eagles. Tannehill’s record, in fact, is two games better than Tom Brady’s 8-3 mark in his last 11.

In July, ESPN conducted a quarterback ranking system based on the opinions of 50 league “insiders” that included some head coaches, assistants and GMs. Tannehill was rated at the bottom of the third tier in the four-tier system.

“He is one of those guys like [Cincinnati’s Andy] Dalton, where you wait for them to take the next step, but they kind of just level off,” one former GM said in the poll.

“He has a good arm and is a good athlete, but similar to that [Sam] Bradford-type deal, he really hasn’t done much except tease us and flash a little bit,” one personnel director said. “He needs to be managed, like a lot of them do.”

Tannehill has managed a bit better than people give him credit for. He was in the middle of a 7-1 stretch in his final eight games in 2016 — throwing for 1,723 yards, 13 touchdowns, five interceptions and a quarterback rating of 100.1 — when he tore a knee ligament and missed the rest of 2016 and all of 2017.

His numbers in Sunday’s win over the Raiders were nearly perfect — 17-of-23 for 289 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions and a 155.3 rating. For the season, he’s 54-of-74 for 687 yards, seven touchdowns, two interceptions and 74 rushing yards.

The Dolphins are a different team with Tannehill playing. Under head coach Adam Gase, Miami is 10-5 with Tannehill starting and 8-12 without him.

“I think it’s just the cohesion of our two minds,” Tannehill told reporters last week. “We work really well together. We think alike.”

Said Gase: “His accuracy down the field is probably one of the better ones in the league, which I love saying considering that I was told he can’t throw the deep ball.”
