I don't like the term and don't think it's a real thing. Was Duke a "basketball" schooler pre coach K? If we won the natty in Basketball, we would be a "basketball" school. I went to ATM when Billy Clyde was coach and Acie Law was a star. People camped out for tickets. We were a basketball school (short lived) during those years. People are more loyal to football because the whole experience is more fun, but we can and have been a basketball school. The students need to show up, period. That said, hire a winner, people will show up. The team deserves better.
