They do not have it in their DNA to be physical and dominant at the LOS. And even with all the shifts in the SEC the #1 defining characteristic of winning in the SEC is being physical and dominating the LOS.

Name one team that has won the SEC in the last 25 years (since the spread really came on the scene with OU’s national title in 2000) that wasn’t dominant on the LOS. I can’t do it.

t.u. hasn’t had that sort of team in the trenches since 2005 and even though they ran the spread it was more of what Meyer ran at Florida that was based on having a physical QB running the zone read and hitting play-action passes. And that was an anomaly for them. They have always been known for having a country club environment and were soft under Brown before the Vince Young seasons and were soft afterwards. And none of Strong, Herman, or Sark have changed that. They’re pretty loaded at skill positions and have a couple dudes in the trenches but not much depth and don’t have the mindset of wanting to hunker down and dominate the man across the LOS from them.

SEC teams are definitely willing to spread out these days and throw the ball around but we are still a LOS league at heart.
