Offensive Issues

Ours primary issue is that we have no one at WR that any defense is going to be afraid of. Our lack speed at that position is mind boggling, but the fact that we don't have anyone (other than Moose who you never know what he is going to do) that can create some separation in the intermediate pass game kills us. So as a coordinator/head coach who knows those issues, you have to be intentional on creating space with your route concepts. I have not seen that at all this year. There has been very little rub concepts or switch concepts where WRs are crossing and trading space landmarks. There has been very little releasing the back free and getting it to them now in space. There has been very little empty pass game creating quick matchups in space. There has been very little screen game. All of these are principles in a spread offense, but we are not a spread offense. We are an offense relying on a great run game to free up WRs in the play action game. When our WRs can't create space 1v1 that will never work.

So, if you know this as a coordinator, you have to use multiple formations, shift/motions, and/or tempo every play to create space in the both the run game and the pass game. Today we played the check with me game way to much trying to go on two and three counts. This allowed the defense to line up, play their responsibility, and prevented us from motioning a ton. Notice the game winning drive...tempo, motion, etc. That has to be the game plan every drive...not just when we need to score. You can't call plays with your hands tied behind your back and try to call a perfect play when you realize you don't have game breakers on offense. Quite the opposite, you have to create the game breakers by creating alignment and assignment conflicts with your formations, shifts, and motions. You have to trust that you are trying to beat kids and not other coordinators.
