In reviewing the game and trying to find out why we're giving up big plays on run defense. Most of the problems I'm seeing are correctable with reps and experience. It's encouraging. I'm going to post some screenshots and focus primarily on Hilliard #46 and J. Evans #14. 46 was certainly rusty and did not always do his job, but he will get it corrected I feel assured. Evans didn't play as well in this game as he did against ASU, he made a lot of mistakes, was late a bunch and missed several tackles by trying to take someone out with the big hit. He's got a ton of ability though and will be a force as the year goes on.
The first series of screen shots is on the first big run. In the second series they had the ball I believe it went for 24.
46 is the LB at the bottom of the screen, The center is going to come out to take him. He has to take on the center and knock his butt back in the hole he came from. Alaka is the LB at the top, he fills the hole the center creates when he leaves. If 46 stuffs his man, Alaka makes the tackle for little or no gain. Instead 46 tries to go around the center.
