Garrett, Kirk named to Walter Camp Player of the Year watch list
Kirk also named to the Paul Hornung Award watch list
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Texas A&M football standouts Christian Kirk and Myles Garrett were among the 40 players named to the preseason watch list for the 2016 Walter Camp Player of the Year Award on Friday.
“We are proud to continue the great work of Walter Camp and recognize the best college football players in the nation,” Walter Camp Foundation president Robert Kauffman said. “This watch list is a great start to what is shaping up to be another exciting year of college football.”
The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in mid-November. The 2016 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 128 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN SportsCenter on Thursday, December 8. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s 50th annual national awards banquet on January 14, 2017 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
Garrett, a junior defensive end from Arlington, Texas, joins LSU running back Leonard Fournette as the 2015 Walter Camp first-team All-Americans on the watch list. Garrett was the SEC leader in sacks, tackles for loss and forced fumbles in 2015 and ranked in the top five nationally in all three statistical categories.
Kirk, a sophomore wide receiver from Scottsdale, Ariz., earned Freshman All-America and SEC Freshman of the Year honors in 2015 after leading the Aggies in catches, receiving yards, touchdowns, punt and kickoff return yardage and all-purpose yardage.
The multi-talented Kirk was also named to the watch list for the Paul Hornung Award Presented by Texas Roadhouse on Friday, which is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission and football legend and Louisville native Paul Hornung.
The Walter Camp Foundation is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. The 22 awards boast over 700 years of tradition-selection excellence.
