Is A&M's next commit looming?
Cy-Fair DT Landon Rink has set his commitment date for next Tuesday and odds strongly favor A&M at this point. Even though Rink is a Texas legacy, that school has not been a contender for him for some time. For whatever reason, they backed off about the time Mike Elko was hired, and Elko went full speed after him. The other contenders are USC and Penn State, but they seem to be pretty distant runners-up (as of today).
A&M's likely QB commit still seems...likely
4-star QB Husan Longstreet has had A&M as his leader for about six weeks now and his commitment date is set for April 14. He visited Auburn last weekend, but that does not seemed to have dented A&M's lead for him. In fact, Landyn has him listed as a visitor coming in this weekend. A good trip could pretty much lock this one down.
Aggies getting after Pearland standouts (FINALLY)
Over the past several years, Pearland has added a third high school, Shadow Creek, and it has jumped past Pearland High and Dawson in terms of overall football talent. A lot of that has to do with being able to pull from Missouri City, which Manvel has done for 20 years. But this year, A&M is especially interested in two Shadow Creek players: 4-star CB Cobey Sellers and 4-star WR Jacorey Watson. Watson has stated his interest in the Aggies already, having mentioned them as a top school for him, and they seem to be gaining some momentum with Sellers as well. He will visit this weekend and has set up an official visit for June. Right now, it looks like OU is the primary competition for him, but Texas has done well with Shadow Creek over the past several seasons.
Good news/bad news
Pflugerville 4-star WR Adrian Wilson de-committed from Oregon earlier this week, a move that I thought was going to lead to a quick flip to A&M. Apparently that's not the case. Landyn knows Wilson well, they've grown up together, and he said he doesn't think Wilson would flip to the Aggies at this point. I've also heard that A&M may have a few other receiver options they'd like to look at before Wilson.
Blaylock's commitment no issue for A&M
Atascocita 4-star RB Tory Blaylock committed to Oklahoma today. After being a real factor for him early on, A&M really backed off after getting Tiger Riden, who was much higher on their list of RB recruits (read: first). I saw Blaylock play this past fall against Katy and his speed and size are impressive -- but he also fumbled three times and was benched.
A&M is, however, still in the market for another running back. Right now, they're making a run at 4-star Akylin Dear out of Quitman, Miss., who has yet to visit. But there's a very real chance of him taking an official over the summer.
No slowing down in an Elko practice
One thing that I noted in practice on Tuesday was that Elko had all the offensive players running at full bore all the time. If you caught a pass in a drill, you sprinted 40 yards. As a result, it was especially fun to watch Amari Daniels, Le'Veon Moss and Rueben Owens, all of whom looked like they had some extra burst compared to last year. Elko explained that this is by design, and is supposed to prevent soft-tissue injuries during the season. If you're already prepared to go 100% all the time, the reasoning goes, your body will be used to it when gametime comes.
This seems pretty logical, but I have not seen that before at an A&M practice, be it with Mike Sherman, Kevin Sumlin or Jimbo.
A&M already back fishing in the portal
Earlier this week, the Aggies offered Indiana graduate DT Philip Blidi, who went into the portal 10 days ago. Blidi, who started his career at Texas Tech, had a career-high 30 tackles this past season. Right now, though, the Aggies are on the outside looking in, as he's set up visits to Arizona, Washington and OU.
Hoops also seriously looking in the portal
By my estimate, A&M is already at the 13-player limit for 2024-25 scholarships. That has not stopped Buzz Williams and his assistants from contacting guys in the portal to, at the least, gauge their interest. Not surprisingly, they're looking at wings and big men.
Among the players A&M has reached out to are Colorado SG J'Vonne Hadley (11.6 PPG, 41.7% from 3); Milwaukee G BJ Freeman (21.1 PPG, 35% from 3); Wyoming G/SF Brendan Wenzel (11.6 PPG; 37.7% from 3); UNT G Jason Edwards (19.1 PPG; 35% from 3); South Dakota State PF William Kyle III (No, I'm not kidding; 13.1 PPG, 6.6 RPG); Minnesota PF Pharrel Payne (10.1 PPG, 6.1 RPG); Louisville SG Mike James (12.6 PPG; 34% from 3).
The Aggies have an in-home with Kyle set up already. Obviously, there's going to be some guys who will not be on this team come next fall beyond Boots Radford, Wildens Leveque, Julius Marble and Eli Lawrence.
