Pro Day next Tuesday — Will Ainias be good to go?
When A&M officials told me last week that Pro Day will be on March 19, I was pretty surprised. I figured they’d do it in early April to allow WR Ainias Smith more time to recover from his hairline fracture in his left leg. But he is listed as a participant for next week, so it looks like the injury was pretty minor. This will be a big deal for Ainias, who will have to not only perform well to help his draft stock, but shake the possibly unfair idea that he’s injury-prone.
Familiar faces back for pro day
It won’t just be Aggie seniors taking part in pro day. Some former players and transfers will take part as well. Georgia Tech LB Andre White will return, as will former Aggie QB Kellen Mond, who is looking to reboot his NFL career. Mond’s return is bonus for Ainias and Max Wright, since they have past experience with him.
The only other name leaked in the AD hunt
the search committee did a good job keeping things quiet. When Alabama’s Greg Byrne was rumored to be a candidate, I told you that was garbage and it was. So was the idea that OU’s Joe Castiglione was a possibility. But the last name to be bandied about before Trev Alberts was hired was FSU’s Mike Alford. In a way, that would have been amusing, because you’d have a guy who left Tallahassee overseeing the buyout of another guy who left Tallahassee.
In the end, A&M went with a younger guy in Alberts who could be around for a while.
More from Nebraska folks on Trev Alberts
one former Nebraska football staffer, who didn’t leave on good terms, said “Trev’s awesome. You’ll never hear me say a bad word about him.”
Another staffer (non football) told me, “I’d rather you take Rhule, and I love him.”
The general thought process is that Alberts will get everyone in the AD’s office on the same page or folks won’t be there. Ross Bjork didn’t get everyone unified, which is one reason you heard about “dysfunction” late in his tenure.
The key relationship
Outside of President Welch (and maybe Elko), the most important relationship Alberts will have to cultivate will be with 12th Man Foundation CEO Travis Dabney. The AD and the foundation have to work closely on NIL issues and fundraising, so those two need to get together and establish a unified vision moving forward.
Nobody has said it, but I can’t believe A&M would hire an AD Dabney couldn’t work with.
Owens taking to the new regime well
RB Rueben Owens said that he came to A&M in large part due to Jimbo Fisher. After a rough freshman season and Fisher’s firing, it seemed like he could be a guy who could look to transfer, but he ended up never considering it. I’ve heard from multiple people that he’s loving life under Mike Elko and has taken to the tougher regimen of S&C coach Tommy Moffit in a big way. He’s up to 208 pounds, with plans to play at between 210 and 215 pounds this year.
D-Day is OL Day for A&M
The first weekend for official visits this summer is June 6, and the Aggies have some major targets coming. 5-star tackles Ty Haywood and Michael Fasusi will be in, as will 4-star Lamont Rogers and 4-star Connor Carty. So that will be a big weekend, literally and figuratively.
