Aggies hosting 4-star LB on unofficial visit
There's not much going on in the way of activity going on at the moment in terms of recruiting visits, but Darrell "Duke" Johnson from Eastman (Ga.) Warren County is on campus now. The 4-star lives closer to FSU than UGA, so there's no overwhelming pressure to go to UGA for him. This is his first visit to Aggieland, so a good visit could go a long way.
Pro day, practice start set
Sources at A&M told me this week that A&M's Pro Day is currently scheduled for the 19th of this month and practice set for the 20th. They could be pushed back a day or two, but that's the plan for right now.
Rumored name for AD probably doesn't hold water
There have been very few names mentioned in connection with the A&M AD job, but one that came up this week doesn't make a whole lot of sense for either side. Alabama's Greg Byrne was the subject of some conjecture, which he pretty quickly shot down. For Byrne, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to leave Tuscaloosa because he has a good thing in place and he's actually in charge now that Nick Saban has retired. As for A&M, the last time they had a Byrne it didn't end well. And yes, Greg is Bill's son.
More officials getting lined up, including some for spring
4-star QB Husan Longstreet, out of Corona (Calif.) Centennial, will kick things off with an official visit March 29. Longstreet is currently scheduled to commit April 14, and A&M is now considered the heavy favorite.
The weekend Longstreet intends to commit, another California 4-star will visit. Cornerback Adonyss Currie has set his official for the weekend of April 13-15. At 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, he seems like an ideal Mike Elko corner size-wise.
4-star WR Taz Williams of Red Oak has set his official for June 6-8. He released his top 4 this week and A&M seems to be in good shape there.
4-star CB Cobey Sellers of Pearland Shadow Creek will also be in town that weekend for his official.
Another 4-star CB, Kade Phillips of Missouri City Hightower, will also be in that same weekend.
Hoops is trying something different
In an order to do something to kickstart their offense, the men's basketball team has started to try to push the ball up the court with greater speed. They're trying to get something going within 6 seconds of a miss, a significantly faster tempo than they've shown the past two years. Part of that has to do with the emergence of Manny Obaskei in the starting lineup, but it's mostly in the hopes of getting some easier buckets. It worked Wednesday night in the first half, when they scored 42 points and hit 7 of 10 3s -- and when they went away from it after halftime, the offense stagnated and Mississippi State was able to get off the mat and make it a game.
