Since you've been asking about Tommy Moffitt...
A lot of you guys like to joke about how we talk about how a new S&C coach means the players are working out harder than ever before and they're gonna be ripped and all that stuff. Well, I don't know what the S&C guys were doing after Jerry Schmidt went back to OU, but Moffitt is, from what I'm gathering, working the team at a level they're not used to.
When Schmidt was in town, A&M was as strong as any SEC team and didn't wear down. The last couple of years, they clearly did in several games (Ole Miss last year and South Carolina in 2022 immediately come to mind). Moffitt isn't just interested in strength, he's interested in endurance. In other words, more reps.
Not everyone is liking this. Issues with Moffitt and the effort he was putting in in the weight room was one of the big reasons Jacoby Mathews left (allegedly). Le'Veon Moss has griped about it several times on social media. Other players have told me that workouts can be brutal and you'd better not complain about it. You're not going to find a sympathetic audience.
Whether or not this will work remains to be seen. But Moffitt was the S&C coach for three national champions under three different coaches running three different schemes, so his track record is extremely strong.
McCall's move the right one for him
Cornerback Sam McCall has plans to re-enter the transfer portal after spring practice, a year after arriving from FSU. The former 4-star saw an opportunity for plenty of playing time when he arrived last year, but it's a new coaching staff with a whole lot of new faces and...well, he didn't play well when he had a chance last year. He's got speed and he's got size, but he has trouble turning and running with receivers. He was going to have to put in a whole lot of very good work to beat out the new arrivals, and half of his eligibility is already gone just being a backup. That gets A&M's roster down to about 89 scholarship players.
Cooper's draft stock getting stronger after the combine
Linebacker Edgerrin Cooper went through drills at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis Thursday and put together an all-around good showing. He wasn't first in anything, but he showed plenty of speed and athleticism. He ran a 4.51 40 at 220 pounds, which is more than good enough for a guy who had the season he did in 2023. Speed like that shows NFL scouts that his performance was no fluke and should translate to the next level (as if the film didn't show that enough).
I have said, and continue to believe, he should be the first linebacker off the board in the draft. Dallas Turner could go earlier after a freakish performance yesterday, but he's being looked at more as an edge rusher. It's not a great year for linebackers and teams could hold their fire until the early second round, but Cooper won't all much further than that. Pittsburgh, the Rams, the Cowboys, the Red..whoever the hell they are and the Eagles are all interested in Cooper. And likely more than that.

Big changes being debated today
The NCAA football rules committee is proposing three measures that are likely to be adopted before next season: in-helmet communications, like quarterbacks have in the NFL; allowing iPads and tablets on the sidelines to review previous plays, like in the NFL and the implementation of a two-minute warning...like they have in the NFL. I'm personally not a fan of the two-minute warning being added, but that's more commercial time, so count on it happening. The rest seem like they're overdue.
