CSU-Pueblo finished their season last Saturday with a dub to end up at 8-3. No playoffs this year - their schedule was front loaded with their toughest 3 (Grand Valley State, Western Colorado and CO School of Mines) in their first four games. Took Grand Valley to double-OT up there (which was cool), lost to Western (which they probably shouldn't have) and got railed by CO Mines (which everyone has). After playing special teams and getting 3 series in the 4th quarter of game 1 against Midwestern, my son came in on the 3rd series of the game in Grand Rapids and started at MLB the rest of the season (with the exception of the last game). Pueblo had gotten way behind in the 1st quarter against them, and as we were coming back in the 2nd half, he intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards for a score. He ran back to the middle of the sideline and threw the ball to me in the stands becuase he wanted to keep his first TO. I should've walked off, but we were freaked out that he was going to get penalized for it, so we tossed it back. That was pretty cool, especially in that stadium full of 16,000, which was very much a Division 1 atmosphere.
It was interesting to see his progession. I wondered during the season if he was actually that much better than the kid who was the starter in game 1. In the 2nd to last game against South Dakota Mines, he was ejected in the third quarter for what I thought was a BS targeting call. So we got to see the first half of the last game without him on the field, and it was pretty clear why he was starting. I'd noticed in the last 4 games of the season that the offenses were scheming him - they'd move him out of the box into coverage and run away from him when he would shift away inside the box. That was pretty neat to see.
Today he was named Defensive Freshman of the Year for the RMAC as well as Honorable Mention at linebacker. He deserved it, and I'm glad the conference coaches agreed. We're obviously proud of him, but I'm more happy for him. He works his ass off, loves the game, and I'm glad someone noticed.
I went to every game (wife missed 2 to stay home with our youngest), and the season flew by. I've not traveled as much as I did this fall; I haven't been home on a Saturday since the 2nd week of August, and we'll be out again this weekend - headed to watch the Aggies, finally. Will be interesting to see the Ags play without Jimbo on the sideline.
