Dominican Republic thoughts/suggestions

I have a co-worker who is considering a trip to DR after their wedding and was looking for feedback. I've never been and know very little about it. The husband and wife are both in accounting with only a few years experience, so probably a combined household income of $100k or so... so not big spenders.

Is DR considered safe? What's there to do there? Just beaches or other things? Recommendations on places to stay? Any other good/bad things?
