I've benefitted greatly from the music suggestions and discussions here, so I thought I'd throw this out there in the spirit of giving back.
I set out to curate a playlist for my family outside by the pool this summer. My library of music I own isn't too bad so I started building the playlist from my library. I eventually decided to just build it on a music streaming service and actively pursued things outside of what was in my library. I considered much of what I could remember being discussed here. Bon Iver was a great addition. Jason Isbell didn't really fit what I was going for in this case, but is now a favorite.
At some point, the playlist was pushing 30 hours of music. I started trying to whittle it down to about half that. But as I listened to the list trying to cut it down, I repeatedly got distracted by the music of a couple of bands/artists that would grab my attention and cause me to spend more time listening to them instead of working on my playlist. Sometimes I ended up adding MORE songs by these bands/artists when I was actively trying to remove songs from the list.
Most of these bands/artists don't merit mentioning because they're not all that obscure. But one band that I enjoyed he most is one that I stumbled on pretty randomly and was not at all familiar with before, so I thought I'd share:
The Rural Alberta Advantage
They have released three albums, the most recent in September 2014. I have spent more time listening to the first two.
If you're going to given one song a chance, I'd suggest "Don't Haunt This Place" on the album Hometowns.
Wikipedia classifies them as strictly Indie Rock. That's probably fair.
And... not related to my playlist project, but a band I plug every chance I get because I don't think they get the attention they should: Yo La Tengo.
