I grew up backpacking a fair amount in east TN and western NC, and through the years have done various trips in CO and, to a lesser extent, MT.
Looking at gear (in large part after a recent trip while thinking, “This stuff is heavy as ##@# (as I get older), and wonder if there is lighter stuff out there?”).
Question: when does one use a tent without a floor and/or netting? I can see maybe in the winter when you are not concerned about bugs or being wet, or if you are using some sort of weatherproof bivy or a cot, or in the desert, but otherwise wondering where the heck these people are camping in the photos where they are sleeping with a pad, bag, and simple covering. Even in summer time, up above the treeline, weather can get sideways quick; and seems miserable not to have something that keeps you dry.
