Use your mobile phone to pick up traffic jams in advance. Got around a 10 mile back up on I-10 at the La- Mississippi border by taking the back roads into Slidell-- but then I got stuck for an hour trying to cover 1 mile going in to Orange over the Sabine River because I didn't check it out in advance. I-10 construction can be brutal.
