On a different post I mentioned that I used to live by a Secret Service Agent. His stories were pretty fascinating but his Jesse Jackson stories were pretty funny.
The first thing he told me was when he was out on rotations with the Carter's, Regans or Bushs he never touched the presidents or first ladies. With Jesse they were always so afraid of how he (Jesse) liked to wade into crowds not seeming to care or being afraid of getting shot. So (Mike) my neighbor said he used to grab the back of Jesse's belt and push and pull him into and out of crowds while him and his team were on the highest of alert fearing the worse. Mike said no other president or presidential candidate he ever had to protect would get themselves into crowds like Jesse did.
Mike had an aerial photograph in his office (that was in his home) that showed him walking immediately beside Jesse on the streets of Harlem one day. In this picture there are literally thousands of Harlem residents surrounding them and thousands more hanging out of the high rise buildings above them. Mike said when he looked up and saw all of the people who could have easily shot them and all of the people who were bumping into them he knew they were going to lose their lives that day. He said at one point he couldn't even see another Secret Service Agent nor could he hear anything over the roar of the crowd.
He said he was yelling at Jesse just to be heard to watch were he was stepping as Mike noticed there was a puddle over a man hole cover they were approaching. Jesse kept asking Mike what he was saying and Mike would repeat every time to watch the water ....watch the water. With Jesse not missing a beat still waving his hands above his head he said to Mike...oh I thought you said to walk on the water....Mike said he yelled in Jesse ear....you're not that good preacher.
Another time while they were at a fund raiser in a hotel Mike said the Secret Service had overnighted a bullet proof vest for Jesse. The hotel manager gave the package to Mike and Mike asked Jesse to walk into the bathroom with him that he had something for him. Mike opens the package and shows the vest to Jesse and asks him to put it on for fit. Jesse puts it on and likes how it looks in the mirror and turns back towards Mike. To Jesse's surprise Mike acts like he's taking out his pistol and tells Jesse he wants to test the vest. Jesse starts yelling at Mike .....NO MIKE NO !!!! Then they got a good laugh over it.
Mike says to me could you even imagine telling President Reagan or President Bush you want to try out their bulletproof vest ? He said Jesse was a great guy and alway knew he wasn't going to be elected president but he was making too much money to quit. Mike told me that was a direct quote from Jesse.
